BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Sophomore captain Hunter Van Houten has been distinguished as the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week for his efforts in the Falcons back-to-back home wins over the weekend. The announcement came from the league's office in Cleveland, Ohio Monday morning.
"I am happy for Hunter to get this award. He is very deserving and does a great job for us in so many different areas," said head coach Fred Thompson. "He is the type of player that does every correctly, but can often be overlooked for his work. I am very glad he had the intangible stats this week to make it obvious to everyone exactly what he does so consistently for us."
Two seemed to the key number for Van Houten over the weekend as the Valparaiso, Ind. native made a pair of starts and went on to sink two goals while assisting on two other scores. Van Houten had almost a perfect weekend as a field player with his .667 shot percentage (2-3) and closed the two game stretch with six points.
By netting a goal in the non-conference finale against Detroit (W, 2-1) and sinking one versus Western Michigan (W, 4-1), the midfielder became the second Falcon to score in consecutive matches at home. Fellow captain Abiola Sandy was the first to do so this season after scoring against Central Arkansas University and Canisius College in the Falcon Classic in September.
The weekly honors mark the first of its kind in Van Houten's career with the Orange and Brown and the second time the MAC has recognized him this season. On Sept. 21, he was named the conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
By Van Houten earning the award, he and former POW Paul Shoemaker (Sept. 24, 2007) are the sixth group of BGSU teammates to earn POW mentions in the same season. The last group to accomplish the feat was the combination of Ty Fowler and Chris Dore during the 1999 season.
Corbi Yee of the women's soccer Falcons was also named the Player of the Week completing the BGSU MAC sweep for just the second time in University history. On October 13, 2003 both David DeGraff and Samantha Meister shared the spotlight of the award.
