Soccer Falcons Prepare for Bearcats and Hawks
October 09, 2007 | Men's Soccer
Oct. 9, 2007
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Men's Soccer Falcon's are beginning to tie the loose ends around their non-conference schedule as they travel to Cincinnati Wednesday and will look forward to only a pair of additional non-MAC matches ... the MAC season, however, will begin to shift into gear beginning with Hartwick's trip to Bowling Green on Sunday afternoon ... both matches can be followed via gametracker from the home team's websites.
PETKUS EARNS FIRST SHUTOUT
In his fourth career start, red-shirt junior Brent Petkus recorded his first career shut-out for BGSU as the defense held yet another opponent scoreless in 2007... the Falcon defense needs just one more shutout to tie the most recent record of five in one season set in 2003 ... the program single season record of 12 was reached in 1991, 1996 and 1997.
KEEPIN' THE KEEPER TRADITION
With Petkus' shutout on Sunday, October 7, Bowling Green has now seen 12 pairs of goal keepers post at least one shutout in the same season ... Paul Shoemaker has three on the current calendar ... on four other occasions (79-81-82-96), a keeper tandem has shared at least one shutout ... between the years of 1970 and 1976 BGSU saw more than one keeper blank an opponent during the season ... the same thing happened from 1985-1987 ... the last time two BGSU keepers recorded shutouts in the same seasons was 1991, while in 1996 Scott Vallow and Ty Fowler combined on two.
HEPPLE PLAYING WITH BAHAMIAN NATIONALS
Red-shirt sophomore Cameron Hepple was not in attendance for Sunday's match and will not be in attendance for future matches due to this representation on the Bahamian National squad ... last season, Hepple missed a number of games as he and the team competed in the CONCACAF World Cup Tournament.
SHOOTING THE LIGHTS OUT
As a team, BGSU took a season high 27 shot attempts and placed a season high 11 on target against IPFW (Oct. 7) ... it was the second time this season the Falcons fired more than 20 shots ... the other was against Canisius (Sept. 16) ... both of those matches were played at Mickey Cochrane Field ... on an individual level, senior captain Abiola Sandy leads the Falcons with 25 shots and three goals.
IF YOU COVER ONE, COVER `EM ALL
Six soccer Falcons have scored at least one goal this year ... as previously mentioned, Sandy leads the team with three goals ... Hepple and freshman Thomas McLean each popped in two scores ... junior Gavin Dozier, red-shirt sophomore Chuko Evwaraye and freshman Matt Klancic are each responsible for one goal this season ... Klancic is the only Falcon with both a goal and an assist.
MAY WE HAVE A MOMENT OF YOUR TIME?
Bowling Green has forced five games into overtime ... BGSU is 0-2-0 when a match is resolved in the first OT period, but is 1-0-2 in double OT ... in 11 games, the Falcons have played for 1056:56 minutes.
COACH COCHRANE, MAY WE HAVE A MOMENT OF YOUR TIME?
At Mickey Cochrane Stadium, the Falcons have taken three-of-four matches past the regulated 90-minutes ... in those games BG is 1-2-1 ... with the exception of Sunday's tie, each BGSU home match has seen a one goal differential.
BGSU AND THE NATIONAL FIELD
In holding the 24th overall ranking, Michigan State (Oct. 3) became the second nationally ranked program the Falcons have encountered this season ... Ohio State (RV) entered the Sept. 20 match ranking 19th ... both teams bested the Orange and Brown 1-0 ... the Falcons will also face back-to-back powerhouses, 21 Michigan and 22 Akron, on Oct. 17 and Oct. 20, respectively ... if UM and Akron remain ranked, the foursome of opponents will be the greatest number of national contenders the Falcons have faced under Fred Thompson.
SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
(October 10 - Gettler Stadium)
The University of Cincinnati Bearcats (4-5-1) are currently undefeated in their home stadium ... additionally they have allowed just one opponent goal in those four outings (Georgetown) ... UC will enter the match on a one game win streak after defeating DePaul on October 6 at home ... to date, 10 of UC's 16 goals have come in the second period of play and the Bearcats have yet to score in overtime ... as a matter of fact, UC has only posted one shot in two OT matches ... seven different Bearcats have scored this season with Kenny Anaba leading the way with six goals ... BGSU leads the all-time series over UC (6-2-1) but have not beaten the Bearcats since traveling to Cincinnati on October 17, 2001 ... the Falcons picked-up their tie on August 30, 2003 (0-0 2OT) at home.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
(October 14, 2007 - Mickey Cochrane Stadium)
Hartwick College (3-3-2) begins its inaugural season as an affiliate member of the MAC after posting an overall record of 8-10-2 in the Atlantic Soccer Conference in 2006 ... the Hawks call Oneonta, N.Y. home and have fielded a men's soccer team since 1956 ... the Hawks are 0-1-0 after losing to 22 Akron on Saturday, Oct. 6 ... the squads will have met just once prior to this season's first MAC meeting in a 1984 match where the Falcons shutout the Hawks, 1-0, at the Mayor's Cup IX tournament.
