BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The men's soccer Falcons have announced a $622 donation will be made to the American Cancer Society as a result of the team's fundraising efforts for the non-profit organization.
Originally, the Falcons organized a donation drop-off point at the Oct. 24 match against Detroit, but due to the generosity of the friends and family of Falcon soccer, the efforts continued into the following match against Western Michigan. Various members of the Athletic Department staff were on hand both days to assist the team.
The BGSU Athletic Department administration also became involved with the effort by pledging a $50 donation for every Falcon goal scored against Detroit in the marquee event of ACS Day at Mickey Cochrane Field. Senior Ryan Perea and Sophomore Hunter Van Houten each netted goals that day to take advantage of the department's $200 minimum donation guarantee.
Extended members of the Falcon Athletics' family were also on hand at the Oct. 24 game selling handmade Relay for Life bracelets.
The event was inspired by Derrick Dozier, a cancer survivor and father of BG junior midfielder Gavin Dozier.
"I was motivated to put on the event by my dad's struggle with cancer that began my freshmen year.
"... Sometimes you just need to do what is right. I would like to thank the Athletic Department and coach Thompson for their support throughout this process. I also hope that this even was not a one-time thing. Personally, I look forward to the possibility of making the event bigger and better for years to come. I welcome the thought that our team can help to spread the message of the cancer awareness as well as support the American Cancer Society, its research and the work they do on a daily basis."
