BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball program and head coach Danny Schmitz has announced the signing of two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Jonathan Berti and Kacy Dwornik will both join the Falcon program for the 2008-09 academic year, as the two recently signed their signatures on the dotted line.
"The things we really needed to address this year in recruiting were team speed and finding a good-left handed pitching arm - with us losing a lefty after this season," said BG assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Rick Blanc. "Jonathan [Berti] will definitely help us out with the speed aspect and then we're expecting Kacy to come in and fill that left-handed void for us."
Berti, a 5-10 infielder, is currently in his senior year at Troy High School in Troy, Mich. This past season as a junior, he was named to the All-Oakland Activities Association [OAA] Team, as well as the All-District and Academic All-District teams, as he has hit over .400 the past two seasons. The right-handed throwing and hitting shortstop has been a three-year starter for head coach Frank Divito and was also the starting goaltender for the Troy Sting Midget A hockey team that won the MAHA State Championship and was runner-up in the USA Hockey National Championship.
"Jon is a very good athlete, he runs well, he's got a good arm from shortstop range and he's a good enough athlete where we feel we can put him anywhere in the field and he can help us out," said Blanc. "We don't know where he'll end up playing here, but he's a utility-type of player that is good enough to play any position because he's just that good of an athlete."
Dwornik, a 6-5 pitcher, is currently in his senior year at Toledo St. John's High School in Toledo. Last season as a junior, the left-hander finished the year with a 2.70 earned run average in 31 innings pitched, while he struck-out 26 and walked just 12 batters. He has earned three varsity letters for head coach D.J. Elkhart, while this past summer, he took part in the Buckeye Elite Showcase, which includes the top high school players in Ohio.
"Kacy has a tremendous upside for us," Blanc said. "He's a 6-5, 205-pound kid right now and they say he can grow a little bit more before it's all said and done. But he throws the ball well. He throws from a low three-quarter arm slot and we're expecting he'll be able to come in and be a good pitcher for us."
The Falcon baseball team, which recently released its' 2008 schedule, will open their season on Feb. 22 when they head to Bowling Green, Ky., where they will face Western Kentucky in a non-conference three-game series. Their home opener will then be on Mar. 19 when they play host to Cleveland State.
