(BGSUFalcons.com) - Former Bowling Green State University pitching-star, Burke Badenhop, has been traded to the Florida Marlins' organization as part of Tuesday's Major League Baseball blockbuster trade between the Marlins and the Detroit Tigers. The big trade thus far of the winter involved the Marlins sending All-Stars Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to the Tigers in exchange for Badenhop and five other players, including outfielder Cameron Maybin and left-handed pitcher Andrew Miller.
"I'm excited for Burke [Badenhop] and the opportunity that he'll have with the Marlins," said BG coach Danny Schmitz. "The Marlins are like the [Minnesota] Twins, in that they tend to be really good at developing pitchers in their farm system and I think it'll offer him a great opportunity to continue to develop and become the pitcher we know he's capable of becoming."
Badenhop, who played for Schmitz and the Falcons from 2002-05, split time this past season pitching for the Lakeland Tigers (Tigers' Single-A affiliate) and the Erie Seawolves (Tigers' Double-A affiliate) in the Tigers' farm system. The Perrysburg, Ohio native, was selected as the Tigers' Organizational Pitcher of the Year by MILB.com as he has continued to impress many with his development.
In 23 starts pitching for Lakeland, he recorded a 10-6 record, while posting a 3.13 ERA. The Tigers 19th-round selection in the 2005 MLB Draft fanned a total of 78 batters, while allowing just 34 walks in 135.1 innings of duty, giving up just five homers and 47 earned runs. That performance earned him three starts with Erie late in the season where he went 2-0 with a 1.45 ERA and picked up 12 strikeouts, including one against former Falcon-star Nolan Reimold.
Recently, Badenhop has been taking part in the MLB's Arizona Fall League that features six of the top Single-A and Double-A prospects from each respective MLB organization. He has been competing for the Peoria Saguaros, which is one of the eight teams in the league. Thus far thru 32 of the club's games, he's seen time in 10 games with all his time coming in relief duty. The right-hander has posted a 2-2 record with a 3.24 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 16.2 innings of work.
