Falcons Down Xavier, 6-1; Increase Winning Streak to Three Matches

TOLEDO, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team got off to a slow start, but rallied in a big way, picking up a 6-1 win over Xavier University Saturday afternoon (Feb. 10). The non-conference dual match was held at Shadow Valley in Toledo.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 2-0 on the weekend and 4-3 in dual-match play this season. BGSU has won three consecutive duals. The Musketeers drop to 4-2 on the year.
For the second consecutive day, BGSU dropped the doubles point, as XU picked up victories at the top two flights. The Falcons' lone doubles victory came at the third flight, as sophomore Stefanie Menoff and freshman Samantha Kintzel -- BG's winningest two players this season to date -- teamed up for an 8-5 win.
After falling behind by that 1-0 count, BGSU responded by winning all six singles matches in straight sets. Senior Ashley Jakupcin lost only two total games in her win over XU's Jackie Vilines at the top flight, while Kintzel topped Kara Courtney in the minimum two sets at flight #2.
Junior Jenna Nussbaum lost only three games in her third-flight win, while sophomore Kelsey Jakupcin won both sets by 6-3 scores at the fourth level.
Freshman Katia Babina and Menoff were victorious at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively, while junior Andrea Volle and sophomore Libby Harrison each won pro-style sets over XU's Jarmila Kavecanska in matches that did not count in the overall team scoring.
Menoff's two wins on Saturday give her an overall record of 23-7 this year, including a 13-1 singles mark. Kintzel is now 10-6 at both singles and doubles to rank second on the team in overall wins. Kelsey Jakupcin has 16 overall wins on the year, picking up her eighth singles win of the season to go along with eight doubles victories.
The Falcons play their third match in as many days on Sunday (Feb. 11), hosting Detroit at Shadow Valley. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
