Falcons to Face Michigan State, Butler This Weekend

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis team puts a four-match winning streak on the line this weekend. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean, 5-3 in duals this spring to date, head to East Lansing for a Saturday (Feb. 24) match vs. Michigan State University, before returning to Northwest Ohio to face Butler University Sunday (Feb. 25) afternoon.

Saturday's Michigan State match is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The BGSU-Butler match is set to start at 3:00 p.m. at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo.
The Falcons are 5-3 in dual-match action this season, and won three duals at Shadow Valley two weekends ago (Feb. 9-11). BG topped Duquesne (4-3), Xavier (6-1) and Detroit (7-0) on back-to-back-to-back days. Last weekend's scheduled match with Ferris State was cancelled.
Michigan State is 7-1 in dual matches on the season, with wins over four Mid-American Conference schools -- Eastern Michigan (5-2), Toledo (5-2), Miami (7-0) and Ball State (7-0). The Spartans tied the school record for best start, winning the first seven matches of the year before losing a 4-3 decision to East Tennessee State last weekend.
Butler enters a busy weekend of action with a dual-match record of 2-5 this year to date. The Bulldogs have won two of the last three matches, 5-2 victories over both UW-Milwaukee and Dayton, heading into a Friday (Feb. 23) match against Ball State. The Bulldogs are scheduled to face three MAC squads this weekend, meeting Toledo Sunday morning before taking on the Falcons that afternoon.
Speaking of those Falcons, all nine players on the BGSU roster picked up at least one singles victory two weekends ago, and eight of the nine players won at both singles and doubles during the three-match sweep.
Sophomore Stefanie Menoff continues to lead the Falcons in singles wins, with a 14-1 record after three wins last weekend. Overall, Menoff has a 24-7 mark this year.
Freshman Samantha Kintzel has a record of 21-12 this year to date, including an 11-6 record in singles play. Kintzel, who played at the top singles flight vs. Detroit for the first time in collegiate dual-match play, has teamed with Menoff for a 5-2 doubles mark during the spring schedule.
Sophomore Kelsey Jakupcin has an overall mark of 18-15, while junior Jenna Nussbaum has 16 overall wins this year to date. Freshman Katia Babina (13), senior Ashley Jakupcin (12), junior Andrea Volle (12) and sophomore Libby Harrison (10) each have double-digit win totals in 2006-07.
Following this weekend's two matches, the Falcons will be idle for three weeks, resuming competition on Sunday, March 18, with a home match vs. Wright State. That WSU match will be BGSU's final dual before MAC competition begins ths following weekend.
