Men's Golf Opens Spring Season This Weekend

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - There may still be snow on the ground in Bowling Green, Ohio, but that won't stop the Bowling Green State University men's golf team from competing this weekend...in Tampa Florida. The Falcons will open the 2007 spring season this weekend at the USF Invitational at the Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club, hosted by South Florida.
The field includes: Austin Peay State, Bowling Green, Columbus State, DePaul, Florida Atlantic, Florida Southern, Jacksonville State, Marquette, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, Missouri State, Nebraska, New Orleans, Oral Roberts, Rhode Island, Troy and South Florida.
The Falcons will be led by Jace Walker, who finished the fall season with an average of 73.0, best in the Mid-American Conference. He earned MAC Golfer of the Week honors after finishing fifth at the John Piper Intercollegiate (76-69) and third at the Earl Yestingmeier (71-72-66). The first-ever two-time BGSU MAC Golfer of the Week in the fall season.
Left-hander Trevor Spathelf is not far behind Walker, averaging 75.75 through 12 rounds this past fall. His best finishes came at the Cleveland State Invitational (80-76=156, T-21st), John Piper Intercollegiate (76-77=153, T-26th) and the MAC/Big East Challenge (74-82=156, T-55th).
Matt Schneider and John Powers, a pair of freshman, had their first taste of collegiate action, several months ago, will look to build upon their solid fall seasons. Schneider competed in all 12 rounds for the Falcons this fall, recording a 76.00 stroke average. He finished 26th at the John Piper Intercollegiate (78-75), and 27th at the Cleveland State Invitational (75-83).
Powers played in seven rounds this fall, finishing with a 76.71 stroke average. He shot a career-best 69 at the Xavier Invitational and finished 38th at the John Piper Intercollegiate (77-79).
Other Falcons who could see action this weekend include Dan McIntyre (74.00), Scott Blackburn (77.40), Andrew Ladwig (80.00), Charles Seguin (79.50) and Brad Dearsman (79.75).
