Toledo, Ohio - Florentino Valencia scored 16 points and Jonathan Amos added 16 and the host Toledo Rockets broke open a close game with a 10-0 run over the final 6:09 to defeat Bowling Green, 64-48, in Savage Hall Saturday night. The game marked the eighth straight time that the home team in the series had triumphed since 2004.
The Falcons, who are beginning a stretch of four of their next five games on the road, hung tough throughout the second half. Sophomore Nate Miller found sophomore Brian Moten for a fast break layup to cut the lead to 54-48 with 6:09 to go. Moten was fouled, but could not connect on the free throw.
The Rockets would then score the next 10 points to seal the win.
Samarco led the Falcons with 13 points, while Miller posted his third double-double in 13 career games with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Ryne Hamblet had his top scoring effort in the MAC with 12 points and he added 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
"We need to find a way to put together a full 40-minute game," said Miller. "If we do the things that coach wants us to do we feel we can have success."
BGSU led 15-12 with 11:11 to go on the first half after Samarco hit a free throw. However, the Rockets were able to build a 32-22 halftime lead thanks to a 12-4 scoring advantage at the free throw line. For the game, Toledo made 20-29 from the line, while BGSU hit on just seven of 15 from the charity stripe. The Falcons turned the ball over 23 times, while the Rockets had just 12 miscues.
Neither team could find a consistent shooting touch as BGSU shot 36.5% from the field, while Toledo connected on just 32.8% from the floor.
