BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team, after nearly two weeks off from competition, returns to action in a big way this weekend. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean will host three matches in as many days at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo.
BGSU will host Duquesne in Friday (Feb. 9) action, with first serve scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The Falcons will face Xavier on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 10) at 2:00 p.m., and will close the weekend trifecta with a Sunday (Feb. 11) dual vs. Detroit, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
The Falcons are 2-3 in dual-match play on the season, and BG is coming off a 7-0 win over Youngstown State on Jan. 28. That win began a five-match swing at Shadow Valley.
Entering the weekend, sophomore Stefanie Menoff leads the Falcons in overall wins, with a 19-7 record on the year. That includes a team-best 11-1 singles mark. Menoff won 10-straight singles matches to begin the season, before a loss in the Ohio State match on Jan. 27. But, she bounced back with a win at the fifth singles flight vs. YSU.
Freshman Samantha Kintzel has had a successful start to her career, with a 17-11 overall record, the second-highest win total on the Falcons. Kintzel is 9-5 in singles play to date, including a 3-2 mark in dual-match play at the #2 flight.
Senior Ashley Jakupcin continues to be a mainstay at the top of the Falcons' singles lineup, while Kintzel and junior Jenna Nussbaum have played at the second and third flights, respectively, in dual play. Soph Kelsey Jakupcin, Ashley's sister, has played at the fourth flight for all five of those matches, while freshman Katia Babina, Menoff and junior Andrea Volle all have played at the fifth and/or sixth singles flights since dual play began on Jan. 12.
Duquesne enters Friday's match with a 2-0 dual record this season to date. The Dukes opened the spring season with a 7-0 win over Bucknell last weekend, and DU had one dual match in the fall season, a victory over Mercyhurst.
Xavier is 4-1 this year to date, and the Musketeers are coming off a 6-1 win over Rutgers last Sunday (Feb. 4). XU, which also beat Southern Illinois last weekend, has lost only to Indiana State so far in 2006-07.
Detroit is 1-2 on the year after a 7-0 loss to Toledo last weekend. The Titans' win came vs. IPFW, and UDM also faced Michigan State in dual play. The Titans will play a Friday match at Eastern Michigan before meeting the Falcons two days later.
After this weekend's three matches, the Falcons will return to Shadow Valley next Saturday (Feb. 17), to face Ferris State. BGSU is in the midst of a stretch which sees the team play seven-of-eight matches at Shadow Valley prior to the start of Mid-American Conference action.
