TOLEDO, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team showed no signs of rust after a three-week layoff, winning at every flight en route to a 7-0 victory over Wright State University Sunday (March 18). The non-league dual match was held at Shadow Valley in the Toledo area.
In its final tuneup before next weekend's Mid-American Conference opener, BGSU won with relative ease to improve to 7-4 in dual-match play this season and 6-0 in matches at Shadow Valley.
"We looked good at every flight today," said BGSU head coach Penny Dean. "Hopefully, this was good preparation for our MAC opener and will enable us to carry some momentum into that match."
BG swept the three doubles matches to take an early lead. Junior Jenna Nussbaum and sophomore Kelsey Jakupcin lost only two games in their victory at the top flight, while junior Andrea Volle and freshman Katia Babina won, 8-4, at the middle level.
At the third flight, freshman Samantha Kintzel and soph Stefanie Menoff did not lose a single game in their convincing win.
In singles play, BGSU swept every match, losing a total of only four games in eight sets at flights three through six. Senior Ashley Jakupcin, in the closest match of the day, rallied back from a one-set deficit to pick up an 11-9 win in a third-set tiebreaker over WSU's Tiffani Foster.
At the second flight, Nussbaum was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Audra Beckett.
The Falcons' balance is usually evident in the team's success at the lower flights, and Sunday was no exception. Kintzel dropped only one game in her third-flight win, while Kelsey Jakupcin lost a total of just two games -- one in each set -- in her fourth-flight win.
At the fifth level, Volle was nothing short of dominant, sweeping her two sets from the Raiders' Monica Capozziello without losing a single game. Babina dropped only one game en route to her sixth-flight win over Jackie Garrett.
Sophomore Libby Harrison was also victorious in a singles match that was not included in the overall match scoring.
BGSU's league lidlifter will be next Saturday (March 24), as the Falcons travel to the MAC's 'West Coast' to take on Northern Illinois. The next day, BG will be back in Northwest Ohio to meet Ferris State. That match will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus, weather permitting.
