Falcons Open MAC Schedule With Win at Northern, 6-1

DeKALB, Ill. - The Bowling Green State University tennis team opened the Mid-American Conference schedule with a road win Saturday (March 24), posting a 6-1 decision at Northern Illinois University.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 8-4 overall and 1-0 in MAC action, while the Huskies drop to 4-5 and 0-2, respectively.
The Brown and Orange opened the day by taking the doubles point. Sophomore Kelsey Jakupcin and junior Jenna Nussbaum were 8-5 winners at the number-one flight, while freshman Katia Babina and junior Andrea Volle won by an 8-6 score at the second flight.
In singles action, the Falcons won at each of the top five flights. Ashley Jakupcin was a winner at flight number one, as the senior co-captain dropped only three total games in her win over Lilian Asuaje.
Freshman Samantha Kintzel rallied after losing her opening set, 6-0, but won the next two sets to defeat NIU's Jenny Edner. Nussbaum at the third flight and soph Stefanie Menoff at the fifth level each won in straight sets, while Kelsey Jakupcin, like Kintzel, posted a three-set, come-from behind victory.
The Falcons have little time to enjoy Saturday's victory, returning home to face Ferris State University Sunday afternoon (March 25). That match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus.
