Georgetown on Monday and Tuesday. The Brown and Orange get the day off Wednesday before competing in a double header against Valporaiso on Thursday. Finishing off the week will be a Friday showdown with IPFW again and a game versus Northern Iowa on Saturday, March 10th before returning home.
WELLS WINS MAC EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior Kurt Wells led the Falcons to a road series win in their season opener at Middle Tennessee State. Wells batted .500 with two homeruns, nine RBI and a booming 1.143 slugging percentage over the weekend. Wells started the weekend with a 2-for-5 game, including an RBI and run scored in the season opener.
Bowling Green's lead-off hitter wasted little time in game two, sending the third pitch of the game over the left field fence to hand the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Wells racked up three more extra-base hits (all doubles) in the contest, garnering a total of four RBI and three runs scored. Clinging onto a 12-10 lead in the top of the ninth, the Perrysburg, Ohio native provided a two-RBI double that proved to be the difference in the game as the Blue Raiders scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth. To make things even more impressive, Wells made the jog from center field to the mound for the final out of the game and earned the save. He also stole a base.
Wells continued to shine in the Falcons 8-6 win on Sunday as well, clearing a set of loaded bases with a grand slam in the second inning. Wells thwarted an MTSU scoring threat in the seventh when he made a diving, full-extension snag on a line driving that was tailing away from him, which would have scored a run if not for Wells' web gem.
FALCONS TAKE FIRST SERIES
When Bowling Green stepped onto the field for batting practice at Middle Tennessee State it was literally the first baseball action they had had experienced outside in 2007 due to inclement weather in Northwest Ohio. Despite the Blue Raiders already having five games under their belt, the Falcons made a quick adjustment after a game one loss and took home the two next games and the series victory.
FAST OUT OF THE GATES
The Brown and Orange have a recent history of starting off hot, including a six-game winning streak to begin last season, an 8-1 start to the `05 season and capturing the victory in five or their first six games in 2004. The start of this seaosn was no different as the Falcons took two of three in the season-opening weekend series at Middle Tennessee State. Bowling Green's six-game stretch a year ago had its fair share of drama, beginning with an extra-inning win at Murray State, followed by a 1-0 triumph in the season-opening double-header. Trailing 4-2 at Dayton, Andrew Foster hit a grand slam for a 6-4 win, only to be out done by a four-run bottom of the ninth that gave BGSU a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Penn State.
