The Falcons' Friday match at Buffalo is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Ellicott Tennis Courts. Saturday's Akron match is also slated for a 1:00 p.m. start, at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow, Ohio.
BGSU is 9-4 overall and 1-0 in MAC action. Last weekend, the Brown and Orange opened league play with a 6-1 win at Northern Illinois (March 24), before returning home for a 7-0 victory vs. Ferris State the following day at Keefe Courts. BG has won eight of the last nine matches, with a setback on the road against Michigan State being the Falcons' lone loss in a two-month span.
Buffalo enters the weekend with a stellar overall record of 10-1, including a 2-0 MAC ledger. The Bulls picked up wins over Ball State (6-1) and Miami (5-2) to open conference play last weekend. Like BGSU, UB heads into the weekend riding a four-match win streak.
Akron is 9-6 overall, and the Zips are 0-2 in MAC action entering the weekend. UA suffered a pair of 7-0 losses to Miami and BSU last weekend, with the MU match snapping a four-match winning streak. Akron will host Western Michigan on Friday prior to meeting the Falcons the following day.
Last season, the Falcons posted a regular-season victory over UB (5-2; March 25, 2006), before the Bulls returned the favor with a 4-2 win over BGSU in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Championships the following month (April 27, 2006). Buffalo, after tying for second in the 2005-06 MAC regular-season race, advanced all the way to the championship match of the conference tournament.
Buffalo's MAC Tournament win was the Bulls' first-ever victory over the Falcons, as BGSU had won nine consecutive matches since UB had joined the MAC for the 1998-99 season.
The Falcons opened last season's conference schedule with a 7-0 win over Akron (March 24, 2006). That increased BGSU's series winning streak to 14 matches over the Zips. BG holds a 23-2 series advantage over Akron, with UA's two victories coming in back-to-back seasons, 1991-92 and '92-93.
The Falcons' next win would give BG a double-digit victory total for the fifth consecutive season. The school record is four consecutive seasons with at least 10 wins, which has happened three times (1988-89 to 1991-92; 1996-97 through 1999-2000 and 2002-03 to 2005-06).
Individually, eight of the nine Falcon players have amassed at least 10 singles wins this year to date. Sophomore Stefanie Menoff leads the pack with a 17-2 mark, while freshman Samantha Kintzel is now 15-7. Sisters Ashley and Kelsey Jakupcin each have 12 singles wins to date, while a trio of teammates -- freshman Katia Babina and juniors Jenna Nussbaum and Andrea Volle -- each have 11 singles wins. Soph Libby Harrison has a 10-2 singles mark.
In doubles action, Kelsey Jakupcin and Nussbaum have posted an overall record of 12-11, including a 7-6 mark at the number-one flight in dual-match action. Babina and Volle have a 5-3 mark, with all eight matches coming in flight-two competition during the spring.
The Kintzel/Menoff duo is 12-8 this season, including a record of 7-4 in duals at the number-three flight this season to date.
Following the UB/UA road swing, the Falcons will be home for four of the regular season's five matches, beginning with a pair of contests next weekend. BG will host Miami on Friday, April 6, and Ball State the following day (April 7), with both matches scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start at Keefe Courts.
