BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated Saturday afternoon by a score of 5-1 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Junior Nick Cantrell allowed only two earned runs in 6.2 innings pitched for his start. The Western Michigan Broncos improve to 8-13 overall and 3-2 in the MAC while Bowling Green drops to 11-14 overall and 0-5 in conference play.
Western Michigan jumped out to an early three-run advantage after a pair of fielding errors allowed two unearned runs to cross the plate.
Sophomore Brian Hangbers stroked an opposite-field solo homerun to trim the deficit to two runs in the top of the seventh. Sophomore Ryan Shay followed with an infield single, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Next up was another sophomore, Chris Gacom. Gacom pounded a laser that was just snagged by a leaping Bronco shortstop. Bowling Green's next batter struck a well-hit ball which was caught for another line drive out. A strike-out by the next hitter ended the scoring opportunity.
The Falcons had another scoring chance in the top of the eighth inning, runners on the corners with one out. WMU's pitching staff rose to occasion once again though, fanning the next two batters.
Game three is set for Sunday afternoon at 1 PM.
