BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team won both games of a double header against Valparaiso Thursday afternoon. BGSU captured a one-run victory in both games of the double dip. First up was a 7-6, ten-inning win followed by a 5-4 win the second contest.
Game One Recap
Freshman Dennis Vaughn lit the scoreboard for the Falcons in the second inning when he hit his first collegiate homerun, a solo shot that handed BGSU a 1-0 lead.
After Sophomore Dusty Hawk rolled through the first four innings, the Falcons tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning, all coming with two outs. Sophomore Brian Hangbers began the Falcon scoring surge with a two-out double. Sophomore Ryan Shay continued his hot start to the '07 season by driving in Hangbers from second base.
The bullpen was running smooth until a four-run inning by the Crusaders knotted the score at 4-4 after eight innings. A scoreless ninth inning then forced the Falcons first extra inning game of the season.
Back-to-back singles by Sophomores Marty Baird and Brandon McFarland put two men aboard for Senior Josh Dietz in the top of the tenth frame. Number thirty-four stepped into the box and turned on a pitch for a three-run bomb that gave the Brown and Orange a 7-4 advantage. The outcome was far from determined however as Valpo put together a rally of their own in the home-half of the tenth.
Two singles followed by a walk set up a two-out, bases loaded situation for Valparaiso's Michael Arensdorff. With the pitch count full, all base runners took off on the pitch and Arensdorff placed the pitch into right center field where neither Falcon outfielder could get to it. The first two runners scored, but a perfect relay play by the Falcons resulted in the third runner being gunned out at home on a "bang-bang" play for the third and final out of the game. The victory-clinching defensive play read "832" in the official scorebook.
Game Two Recap
Game two was scheduled for a seven-inning game. McFarland was the star in the second contest. The Perrysburg High School product recorded a pair of two-RBI doubles in as many at-bats, equaling Valpo's total of four runs for the game. Senior Eric Lawson scored the winning run in the bottom of the fifth when fellow Senior Jeff Telmanik pushed him across the dish with an RBI-single. Another member of the senior class, Kurt Wells, worked the mound for the final three outs and earned his second save of the season.
BGSU is scheduled for a rematch with the Mastodons of IPFW Friday morning at 10 AM. Bowling Green pounded IPFW for an 11-0 win earlier during the spring break trip.
