Falcons Face No. 1 Tennessee Before Hosting MAC Weekend

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Orange and Brown of Bowling Green State University (19-6, 4-2) will travel to Knoxville, Tenn. to face the unanimous top collegiate program the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers (43-2, 14-2) for a mid-week two game series before returning to the BGSU Softball Field to host divisional foe Miami (14-27-1) on Friday. The Falcons will play a cross over series with Ball State (13-22, 4-4) on Saturday and Sunday.
CURRENT FALCON EVENTS
BGSU picked-up two come from behind wins over Ohio University in Athens, Ohio ... the Falcons won both ends of the double header to become one of just a handful of teams to squeak in MAC games this weekend ... BGSU will not make-up the games which were postponed in Akron due to snow.

WIEMER NAMED CONFERENCE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Bowling Green State University softball standout Hayley Wiemer has been named the Mid-American Conference's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced late Thursday (April 5) ... Wiemer, a sophomore, earns the honor for the second time in her career, having also been named the S-A-O-W on March 8 ... Wiemer, a native of Sylvania, Ohio (St. Ursula Academy), hit a whopping .714 in five games last week, with 10 hits in 14 at-bats. She had a slugging percentage of 1.214 and an on-base pct. of .765, with a pair of homers and eight RBI in the five games ... in the classroom, Wiemer maintains a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade-point average as an adolescent/young adult science education major.

The Lady Vols of Tennessee are currently the unanimous top program in the nation according to the EAPN.com/ USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 poll ... as of April 9, the Lady Vols accumulated a 43-2 (14-2 SEC) record and will have a show down with Memphis on April 10 prior to the April 11 double header with BGSU ... since March 30, Tennessee has run-ruled 3-of-10 opponents including No. 31 Georgia ... in those 10 decisions, the Lady Vols have outscored their opposition 68-6 with three double-digit scoring outcomes ... on the season, UT has outscored their opponents 241-26 ... Monica Abbott and Megan Rhodes have combined for a 0.53 ERA and are allowing opposing bats a .093 BA ... the two have also combined for 600 strikeouts in 45 games ... five Lady Vols are batting better than .350 with India Chiles leading the cause with a .467 average in 122 at bats ... Chiles has scored a team high 41 runs on a 57 hits ... the Lady Vols are currently enjoying an 18 game winning streak with their last lost dating back to a 4-5 decision on March 14 at Ole Miss ... in their only other loss, Florida blanked UT 4-0 in Gainesville, Fla. ... both UT losses have come at the hands of SEC opponents ... UT of the SEC beat UT of the MAC 9-1 on Mar. 3 in Chattanooga, Tenn. ... this will be the first meeting between the squads ... predicted weather for Wednesday in Knoxville: high of 65 degrees with rain and 70% chance of precipitation.
Miami (OH) (4/13, 1:00 p.m. DH)
The RedHawks of Miami currently are sitting at an even 4-4 in MAC play after splits with Western Michigan, NIU, Ohio and Akron ... Halle Popson leads MU from the plate with a .346 BA in 136 at bats ... she has recorded a team high 47 hits ... she also ranks atop the leader board with a .388 on base percentage ... in 42 starts, she has accumulated just three errors ... Leslie Macedo and Alexis Javier are the only two other RedHawks to join Popson with starts in every game ... the MU pitchers have thrown five shutouts on the year including MAC wins over Western Michigan and Ohio ... Meredith Linch leads the MU staff with 135 IP in 30 appearances ... she has struck out 89 batters but has given up 133 hits ... currently, the opposition has outscored MU 41-18 in the first inning of play... when their opposition has scored in the inaugural inning, MU is 2-16... all time, BGSU leads MU 46-35 ... in their last meeting, BGSU beat MU 10-0 after losing 3-2 to the RedHawks ... last season, BGSU split their only two decisions with MU and did not face them in the conference tournament ... predicted weather for Friday in Bowling Green: mostly cloudy with a high of 52 degrees and 10% chance of precipitation.

The Cardinals currently also hold a 4-4 record in the MAC after beating NIU and Akron while losing to Western Michigan and Ohio ... in 35 starts, Abby Gross is posting a close to .400 BA (.385) leading BSU with 40 hits including a team high seven doubles and a .567 slugging percentage ... she is a perfect 4-4 when attempting to steal an extra base ... Allie Pennock leads the Cardinal sluggers with 28 runs on 35 hits ...from the circle, Elizabeth Milian has translated 129.1 innings pitched to a 2.09 ERA and has seen 56 runs allowed from 120 hits ... along with Amanda Pick and Laura Masch MU has a combined 4.31 ERA and has thrown 136 strikeouts in 972 batters faced ... Bowling Green is just four homeruns away from tying the record of 29 in a single season set last year ... in 2007, the Falcons have already dropped 25 grenades past the fence ... in 28 complete seasons, only four have seen the Falcons go the distance more than 20 times (`01-21, `03-20, `04-26, `06-29) ... current Falcons with at least one long ball include: Hayley Wiemer (6), Allison Vallas (6), Dawnjene DeLong (4), Jeanine Baca (3), Susan Sontag (3), Carly Riepenhoff (2), Ashley Zirkle (1) ... head coach Shannon Salsburg, a true hitter's coach, is also breaking records as the only first year head coach to lead a team to ten-plus long balls in her initial year at the helm.

FILLIN' THE TROPHY CASE
In three spring tournaments, the Falcons appeared in three championship games and brought home two tournament crowns ... BGSU won both the Panera Bread Challenge and the Charleston Southern Tournaments while taking second in the USF Speedline tournament ... while on the road, Hayley Wiemer was named CSU tournament MVP ... Wiemer was also named both MAC East Player of the Week and Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of Mar. 9 following her performance in Charleston ... she garnished the honors again on April 5, 2007 ... Emily Gouge and Susan Sontag were also named to the CSU All-Tournament team ... Gouge also picked up honors as the Most Valuable Pitcher at the USF tournament ... she was named the MAC East Pitcher of the Week four days later.
