CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University tennis freshman Samantha Kintzel has been named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday (April 11). Kintzel earns the honor for the first time in her Falcon career to date.
Kintzel, a native of Libertyville, Ill. (Libertyville H.S.), had an overall record of 4-0 last weekend, going 2-0 in both singles and doubles as the Falcons posted a pair of MAC wins. Her two singles wins came at the number-two flight, and she teamed with senior Ashley Jakupcin for a pair of victories at the third doubles flight.
On Friday (April 6), Kintzel teamed with Jakupcin to down the Miami team of McPhillips and Douple in a tiebreaker, helping BGSU take the doubles point. Then, Kintzel posted a convincing win over Leda Pesotova in singles play, losing only three games in the process (6-1, 6-2). The Falcons' 5-2 win over MU was only BG's fourth in the history of the series, spanning 33 dual matches.
The next day (April 7), Kintzel again teamed with Jakupcin for a third-flight doubles win, this time by an 8-4 reslt, to again help the Falcons take the doubles point against Ball State. Then, she defeated BSU's Haly Calderwood in three sets (6-4, 2-6, 6-4) at the second singles flight. With the Falcons leading the overall match, 3-2, and needing a win in one of the two remaining singles matches, Kintzel rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the third set to top Calderwood.
This season, Kintzel has 34 overall wins to rank second on the team. She is currently 18-8 in singles play, including records of 12-5 in dual matches and 4-1 in MAC action. Kintzel has a doubles mark of 16-8 on the year, including a mark of 3-0 with Ashley Jakupcin (all in MAC play). Overall, Kintzel's doubles teams have gone 4-1 in MAC play to date.
The Falcons have topped the team's MAC win total for all of last season, with a 4-1 record this year after a conference mark of 3-5 in 2005-06. BGSU's 4-1 MAC start is the Falcons' best in seven seasons.
BGSU returns to action with a Saturday (April 14) match against Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.
