BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team captured a 6-4 win at Toledo early Friday evening. Senior Tyler Johnson improves to 4-3 on the season after hurling his second complete game of the season. The Tipp City, Ohio native surrendered just three earned runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out six Rocket batters.
After a Toledo run in the bottom of the first, the Falcons took the lead for good by responding with two runs in the next half-inning. Sophomore Marty Baird began the frame with a single down the right-field line. The next Falcon batter, Sophomore Ryan Shay, mimicked Baird with a single of his own to put two men aboard for Bowling Green. Both runners were eventually driven home thanks to a pair of RBI-hits by Senior Josh Dietz and Junior Andrew Foster.
Baird began the fourth inning as well, this time contributing a solo homerun over the right-center field wall. Dietz recorded his second run-scoring knock of the game in the sixth inning to hand the Falcons a three-run advantage before Toledo notched a run in the home-half of the inning for a 4-2 score.
BGSU increased the lead to four runs in the seventh off yet another clutch hit by Baird. Baird picked up two RBI by powering a pitch through the left side of the infield.
The Rockets attempted a late-inning rally by plated two runs it the bottom of the ninth, but Bowling Breen's Johnson halted the comeback and retired the Boley brothers for the final two outs of the contest.
Game two is scheduled for 1 PM Saturday afternoon at Scott Park in Toledo. Falcon fans can follow along with all the action by listening to 88.1 FM WBGU or watching GameTracker at bsgufalcons.com
