TOLEDO, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team suffered a 7-2 defeat at Toledo Saturday afternoon. BGSU had won the previous nine contests in the series, including a 6-4 win Friday in game one of the weekend series. Sophomore Ryan Shay shined with three hits in the losing effort.
Bowling Green struck first with a score in the opening act. Senior Kurt Wells reached on single through the right side of the infield before advancing to third base thanks to a pair of wild pitches. Shay pushed Wells the final 90 feet to home plate by powering a pitch right back up the middle for the RBI-single. UT forced the next batter into a fly-out to end the Falcon scoring threat however.
Junior Nick Cantrell retired to the first six batters in order before the Rocket lineup warmed up with two runs in the third inning. Toledo notched two more runs in the fourth inning, as well, taking a 4-1 lead.
Shay continued his strong performance in the sixth, reaching safely with another shot up the middle. The Garden City, Michigan native scored later in the inning when Senior Jeff Telmanik put the ball in play and reached on a fielding error by the UT pitcher.
Unfortunately, the Falcon failed to muster much more the last three innings. Shay stroked a triple past a diving Rocket outfield in the eighth inning for Bowling Green's final hit in the 7-2 defeat.
With the series knotted at one game apiece, the Falcons and Rockets get back at it Sunday afternoon in the rubber match. First pitch is scheduled for 1 PM at the baseball complex in Scott Park.
