KALAMAZOO, Mich. (BGSUFalcons.com) - Nationally-ranked Western Michigan University snapped the Bowling Green State University tennis team's winning streak at three matches, as the Broncos picked up a 6-1 win Saturday afternoon (April 14). The Mid-American Conference dual was held at the West Hills Athletic Club.
With the win, the Broncos improve to 17-6 overall and a perfect 6-0 in MAC duals this season. Western Michigan has won 24 consecutive MAC regular-season dual matches. The Falcons drop to 12-6 and 4-2, respectively.
The Broncos, ranked 63rd in the nation, won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The duo of Noriko Saruta and Ashley Moccia downed Falcon junior Jenna Nussbaum and sophomore Kelsey Jakupcin, 8-5, at the top flight.
The Broncos' second- and third-flight duos each won by 8-4 scores, as Kerstin Pahl and Priyanka Parekh bested soph Stefanie Menoff and junior Andrea Volle, while the Emily Dudzik/Carrie Jeanmaire team defeated senior Ashley Jakupcin and freshman Samantha Kintzel.
In singles action, Menoff continued her red-hot play this spring, picking up a sixth-flight win over Dudzik. After dropping the opening set, 6-4, Menoff rallied back for a 6-3 win in the second set, setting up a marathon tiebreaker. When the smoke had finally cleared, Menoff had a 19-17 decision for the victory.
Freshman Katia Babina also battled her opponent, Moccia, to a standoff after two sets, but Moccia was able to outlast her Falcon foe by a narrow 10-8 count to take the win at flight number five.
Kelsey Jakupcin dropped a tiebreaker at the third flight, as Parekh posted a narrow 7-6 (7-4) win in the second set to take that match. Jeanmaire had topped Ashley Jakupcin at the top flight, while Pahl downed Kintzel in flight number-two and Saruta beat Nussbaum at the fourth level.
The Falcons return home to conclude the regular season with a pair of matches next weekend. BGSU will host Eastern Michigan University in Friday action (April 20) before meeting the arch-rival University of Toledo on Saturday (April 21). Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus.
SCOREBOARD WATCHING:
The Falcons are in fourth place in the nine-team MAC race as the regular season enters its final weekend ... FALCON TENNIS NOTES
* Sophomore Stefanie Menoff improved her already impressive singles record with her sixth-flight victory over Emily Dudzik ... Menoff is now a stellar 22-2 in singles play this season, and has a career singles mark of 40-10 ... she is now a perfect 6-0 in MAC singles matches this season to date.
* Menoff has won eight consecutive singles matches, and 12 of the last 13 singles contests ... she is 15-2 in singles matches in dual-match play this spring.
* Menoff's win Saturday gave the Falcons their first point vs. Western Michigan since the 2001-02 season ... the Broncos had recorded 7-0 victories in each of the last five regular-season meetings, and a 4-0 win over the Falcons in the 2004 conference tournament.
* Freshman Samantha Kintzel's loss at the second singles flight snapped a three-match singles winning streak ... despite Saturday's loss, Kintzel still has won seven of her last nine singles contests.
* Despite BGSU's loss to the Broncos, the Falcons still have an outside shot at a share of the conference regular-season title ... BG would need a great deal of help to tie for the crown, as the Falcons would have to go 2-0 next weekend while needing both Toledo and Eastern Michigan to beat WMU and Northern Illinois to top Buffalo.
* The Falcons have assured themselves no worse than the fifth seed for the MAC Championships ... BGSU, 4-2 in the MAC, is two games ahead of Miami (3-4) in the loss column entering the regular season's final weekend ... even if the Falcons were to lose both of next weekend's matches, however, BG wins the tiebreaker over the RedHawks by virtue of a win in the teams' head-to-head meeting.
