Softball Picks Up Second MAC Sweep; Vallas and Wiemer Named POW's

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Sophomore Hayley Wiemer and junior Allison Vallas have been recognized by the Mid-American Conference office for their outstanding play in their four game sweep over Miami and Ball State this weekend. Wiemer has been named MAC East Pitcher of the Week while Vallas earns Player of the Week honors.
The last time the Falcons were handed a sweep of the Eastern division's top weekly distinction was April 17, 2006 as current senior Ashley Zirkle and then starting pitcher Liz Vrabel were named the top Eastern performers.
Bowling Green (23-6) is 8-2 on the conference season and currently sits in second in the Eastern division behind Kent State who is 7-1 in MAC play and 20-14 overall.
Wiemer earns the Pitcher of the Week honor for the first time this season after being named Scholar-Athlete of the Week twice (Apr. 9 and Mar.9) and Player of the Week once (Mar. 9).
The Sylvania native posted a .86 ERA in two complete game wins and four MAC appearances this weekend. She also brought home her first save of the season. In 16.1 innings pitched, Wiemer threw 22 strikeouts without allowing a walk while opposing batters posted a .175 BA against her.
Highlights from her weekend in the circle include holding Miami without a base hit until the fourth inning in the 4-3 win on Friday and retiring 13 straight batters, with the help of five K's, in Sunday's 7-3 complete game win over Ball State.
Vallas earns her first conference nod of the year after bringing home Scholar-Athlete of the Week recognition on May 10, 2006 and a Player of the Week award on May 2, 2005.
The Perrysburg local batted .500 going 5-for-10 including two walks, three doubles and two homeruns this weekend at the BGSU Softball Field. She led all Orange and Brown jersey's with 14 total bases as the lone Falcon accumulating double-digit bases. She also posted a team-high six RBI's and a .615 on base percentage. The first baseman is currently batting .395 overall and .483 in the MAC.
In a duo of Miami wins Vallas batted .500 on the day going 2-for-4 with a walk, a double and a homerun. She scored a run and capped off the day with team highs in slugging (1.500), OB% (.677), total bases (6) and RBIs (3) while enjoying a perfect day in the field. Vallas propelled the Falcons to the win on Saturday over Ball State with her two doubles and one homerun in three at bats on just seven pitches. She recorded two runs and three RBIs while slugging 2.600 and maintaining perfect days in the on base and batting average categories. Her three hits and RBI's were Bowling Green highs. On Sunday the Cardinals walked her once and allowed her to scare a run.
At the completion of the weekend, Vallas skyrocketed through several program record lists including career RBI (90 - 3rd place), career HR (15 - t-4th place), season HR (8 - 3rd place).
Bowling Green is scheduled to travel to the University of Detroit Mercy tomorrow to play two games beginning at 3:00 p.m. and approximately 5:00 p.m.
