BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Senior Captain Tyler Johnson was a man on a mission today for the Bowling Green baseball squad as he hurled his second straight complete game and his third complete effort in his last four starts. The Tipp City, Ohio native picked up a MAC-high fifth win of the season after scattering five hits with no walks and five strikeouts in the 3-0 Falcon victory Friday afternoon. Akron's Billy McKinney was burdened with the loss despite lasting the entire contest as well. Johnson becomes just the second MAC pitcher to throw three complete games so far in 2007.
BGSU banged out double-digit hits for the third time this week, including four different Falcons recording multi-hit days. Senior Kurt Wells was the lead-off hitter and led the way two RBI on two hits.
Sophomore Ryan Shay was struck by a pitch to begin the fourth inning. Next up was fellow Sophomore, Brian Hangbers, who chipped in a sacrifice bunt to advance Shay into scoring position. Bowling Green High School product, Junior Andrew Foster followed with a RBI-single past the outstretched glove of the Zip shortstop to hand the Falcons a 1-0 edge.
Foster shined in the sixth frame as well when he sprinted home, tagging up from third base on a very, very shallow fly ball to score Bowling Green second run of the day. With Johnson cruising through the first eight innings, the Brown and Orange tacked on an insurance run in the home-half of the eighth. Senior Mike Barnard hustled for a two-out infield single, and then advanced to second on a throwing error by the Zip third baseman. Wells stepped into the batter's box next and slapped a pitch up the middle for his second RBI of the game and the Falcons third and final run.
Akron's second hitter in the top of the ninth struck a laser down the left field line for a double. However, Johnson refocused to retire the next two Zips to finish off the complete game shutout.
Bowling Green and the Zips get back at it tomorrow in game two of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 PM. The probable starters are RHP Nick Cantrell (2-5, 4.81 ERA) for the Falcons and RHP Frank Turocy (1-1, 4.56 ERA) for Akron.
