BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team committed a pair of fielding errors in the early going and the four unearned runs that followed proved to be too much to overcome in Saturday's 7-3 loss to Akron.
UA tallied two unearned runs in each of the first two innings for their first four runs. BGSU also scored a run in the first inning though, creating an early 4-1 scenario.
After the Zips added a fifth run in the fourth frame, Bowling Green bounced back with a run of their own in the fifth inning. Junior Andrew Foster and Senior Jeff Telmanik both connected on singles to put runners at the corners for the Falcons. Senior Mike Barnard then stroked a pitch to the right side of the infield for an RBI, scoring Foster from third base.
The lineups quieted down until the eighth inning when three total runs were plated, two for Akron and one for the Falcons. A sacrifice fly by Foster was responsible for Bowling Green's run. With two runners still aboard, the next batter hit a laser down the left field line that was snagged by a spectacular play for the Akron third base man, saving at least one BGSU run and possibly two. The rally ending web gem ended the Falcons scoring threat and eventually led to a 7-3 win for the Zips.
Sunday's 1 PM contest will settle the series as each team has notched a win in thus far.
