BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Thirty-one runs were scored in Sunday's baseball game between Bowling Green and Akron with the Falcons being responsible for just enough of them to take a dramatic 16-15 victory. Senior Captain Eric Lawson provided a walk-off RBI-single into shallow left field in the bottom of the ninth inning.
BGSU banged out a season-high 24 hits en route to their 16 runs. Freshman Derek Spencer drove in five runs on a four-for-five day. Junior Andrew Foster continued his hot streak of late as well, bringing home three runs on three hits.
The Falcons jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after three innings. The majority of those runs came in the form of a four-run second stanza. Senior Jeff Telmanik started things off with a double of the wall in left-center field. Spencer finished off Telmanik's trot around the bags with a rocket shot over the left field fence. Senior Kurt Wells and Sophomore Marty Baird also picked up run-scoring hits in the big second inning.
Spencer continued to shine in the next inning, plating two more runs on shot through the left side of the infield. BGSU later had the bases loaded looking to do more damage, but the Akron pitcher forced an inning-ending groundball.
Akron uncorked the offense in the fourth, scarring the Falcons for five runs. Senior Josh Dietz got one of those runs back in the home-half of the inning though with an RBI-single, giving the Falcons an 8-5 advantage.
The Brown and Orange built the lead back up to 14-6 thanks to a six-run sixth inning. Spencer, Foster, Telmanik and Senior Mike Barnard all tallied RBI hits in the offensive surge. Once again, a defensive stop with the bases loaded by the Zips ended the scoring.
Akron out-slugged the Falcons over the next two innings by a total of seven runs to one. The BGSU lead heading into the ninth inning was down to three runs at 15-12.
A pair of free passes placed two runners aboard for the Zips in the top of the ninth. The Falcons then were tagged with a three-run bomb by Akron's Charlie Lenhard to knot things up at 15-15. Lenhard recorded a game-high seven RBI. However, as mentioned before, Lawson was not to be out-done as he pulled a pitch into left field, scoring the runner from second base for the win. Spencer began the bottom of the ninth with a single up the gut and was advanced to second by a Barnard sacrifice bunt. In fitting fashion, Spencer then scored the winning run off of Lawson's poke into left field.
Bowling Green gets back to action this Tuesday, April 24th with a contest at IPFW. First pitch is scheduled for 3 PM. Live stats will be available via GameTracker right here at BGSUFalcons.com!
