BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - In three previous games against IPFW this season the Falcon baseball team had outscored the Mastodons by a total of 49 to 15 runs (19-0, 11-5, 19-10), but IPFW got some revenge with a 7-2 victory as BGSU traveled to Fort Wayne, Indiana on Tuesday, April 24th. Bowling Green went with a young starting lineup that included seven underclassmen for the non-conference showdown with IPFW.
The Mastodons wasted little defending their home turf, scoring a run in each of the first four innings for a total of six runs. BGSU scored two runs of their own during that span, however. Junior Andrew Foster reached first base in the second inning when he was plunked by a pitch. Freshman Derek Spencer then pushed him to second by laying down a sacrifice bunt. Foster's trip around the diamond was capped off with an RBI-double into right field.
Back-to-back singles for the Falcons in the third inning set the Brown and Orange up with runners at first and second. A fielding error by IPFW then turned a sacrifice bunt attempt into a bases-loaded, no-out situation for BGSU. Unfortunately, a double play followed. The GIDP allowed a run to score, but was followed by another groundball to end the inning.
Unfortunately, the Falcons couldn't muster any more runs and eventually lost 7-2. Senior Josh Dietz delivered a pinch-hit double in a top of the ninth rally attempt, but was stranded in the end.
Bowling Green returns home to take on Tiffin University on Wednesday at Warren Steller Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 PM.
