OXFORD, Ohio - A dazzling, 14-strikeout performance by Miami's John Ely doomed the Falcons in a 12-2 setback in Oxford, OH Friday night. Senior Josh Dietz pounded his third homerun of the season with a shot over the right field fence in the second inning.
Senior Kurt Wells began the contest with a lead-off single. A Brian Hangbers single loaded the bases for Junior Andrew Foster later in the inning. Foster then blasted a pitch down the right field line which was snagged by a diving first baseman, snatching away two potential Falcon runs.
The RedHawks jumped out to an early lead by scoring five runs in the home-half of the first. A misplayed line drive over the Falcon left-fielder gave up an extra run as the next batter recorded a two-run homer.
As mentioned above, Dietz put Bowling Green on the board with a dinger to start the second inning. Unfortunately, the next three batters were retired to end the scoring threat.
Miami notched another run in the second inning and had the bases loaded with no outs. However, Junior Brett Browning came out of the bullpen and pitched a flawless inning. The Cincinnati, Ohio native caught the first batter looking for the strikeout and followed the `K' with an ending-inning twin killing. Browning had a hot hand, entering the game with four straight scoreless relief appearances, spanning 8.0 shutout innings.
Bowling Green saw the deficit increased to 12-1, thanks to two MU runs in the third and a four-run sixth inning. Sophomore Chris Gacom created the final score of 12-2 with an RBI-single in the eighth inning.
BGSU remains in Oxford for game two of the three-game series against the RedHawks Saturday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 5 PM. Live stats will be available right here at BGSUFalcons.com!
