TOLEDO, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Top-seeded Western Michigan University got wins at each of the top three singles flights for a 4-0 win over the Bowling Green State University tennis team Saturday (April 28). The match, a semifinal-round contest in the Mid-American Conference Championships, was held at Varsity Courts on the University of Toledo campus.
The win advances the Broncos, now 21-6, to Sunday's (April 29) championship match against second-seeded Buffalo. BGSU, the conference tournament's fourth seed, sees the season come to an end with an overall record of 13-9.
The nationally-ranked Broncos showed why they have gone undefeated in each of the last three MAC regular-season races. No. 63 WMU won at the top-two doubles flights to earn the day's first point, with efficient wins by scores of 8-1 and 8-2.
Falcon senior Ashley Jakupcin and freshman Samantha Kintzel battled at the third flight against WMU's team of Carrie Jeanmaire and Emily Dudzik. After falling behind by a 2-1 count, the Falcon duo never trailed again. But, the match was halted with the Jakupcin/Kintzel team leading by a 6-5 count, due to the completion of the other two doubles matches.
In singles play, Jeanmaire (flight number one), Kerstin Pahl (two) and Priyanka Parekh (three) picked up wins for the Broncos. For the Falcons, freshman Katia Babina won her first set of the day, defeating Western's Ashley Moccia by a 6-4 count. Moccia held the early lead in the second set when that fifth-flight match was abandoned.
At the sixth flight, Dudzik won the opening set over sophomore Stefanie Menoff, but Menoff battled Dudzik to a 4-4 draw in the second set before play was stopped.
"We could have played better in a lot of instances, but Western was just the better team today," said Falcon head coach Penny Dean. "Congratulations go out to our two seniors, Ashley Jakupcin and Erica Wolfe, for four great years. We never could have gotten this far without the two of them.
"For the rest of the team, our memory of yesterday's Miami match -- the way we competed and the heart we showed in that comeback -- is something we will take into next season."
The Falcons lose the services of the two seniors, but Dean and assistant coach Jay Wiseman had seven underclass players on the 2006-07 squad.
