TOLEDO, Ohio - A Toledo pitching change in the sixth inning led to five BGSU runs and an Orange and Brown victory today as the Falcons completed the weekend sweep of the rival Rockets, 5-1. Bowling Green improves to 28-9 overall and 11-5 in the Mid-American Conference. Toledo rests at 8-30 and 3-13 on the season. The road win clinched the Falcon's birth in the conference tournament in early May.
Toledo had the early 1-0 advantage via Brittany Robbins' solo homerun in the fourth inning, but Dawnjene DeLong's textbook single to right field scored both Emmy Ramsey and Hayley Wiemer as BGSU stole control of the lead for the first time in the sixth inning at 2-1. Ramsey and Wiemer's prior back-to-back singles were the first consecutive hits for the Falcons on the day. BGSU finished the game with eight hits; six of which came in the final two at bat series.
The hot bats arrived just after Toledo retired starting pitcher Stephanie Moore and Sierra Pereira entered in relief. Moore finished the day giving up two hits and striking out four. In two innings, Periera allowed five earned runs on six hits and struck out one Falcon. Emily Gouge threw seven K's of her own for the Falcons in five complete innings.
In the closing inning, Wiemer inched closer to the single season homerun record with her blast over the right field wall. It was the ninth time this season she has sent one out of the park and in order to tie the record of 10 she will need just one similar hit. Base runners Ramsey and Jeanine Baca also scored on the zinger. The duo smacked twin infield base hits prior to Wiemer's at bat.
With her four at bats, Baca met and exceeded the current career at bat mark of 711 set by Gina Rango (2003-06). As of today, Baca has been to the plate 713 times as a Falcon. Today she was 1-for-4 and scored once. She is also nationally listed as one of the top fifteen hardest players to strikeout. This season she has struck out a team-low four times in 120 plate appearances.
Bowling Green will close the regular season next weekend at home by taking on Northern Illinois and Western Michigan. Northern Illinois will invade the BGSU Softball Field on Friday for doubleheader action where as Western Michigan will face the Falcons in single contests on Saturday and Sunday.
