TOLEDO, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team continued its winning ways at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club, posting a 5-2 victory over Ball State University Saturday afternoon (April 7) in Mid-American Conference dual action.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 12-5 in dual-match play and 4-1 in MAC action. BGSU has won three-straight matches. The Cardinals drop to 6-12 and 1-5, respectively.
The match was closer than a 5-2 final might indicate. With play completed at all but the top-two singles flights, the Falcons held a slim 3-2 overall lead as both singles contests went to a third set.
At the second flight, freshman Samantha Kintzel fell behind BSU's Haly Calderwood by a 3-0 score in the third set, but Kintzel was able to rally for a 6-4 win. Meanwhile, at the top flight, senior Ashley Jakupcin had dropped her first set to the Cards' Sophie Quist, but came back to take each of the next two sets and the match.
The Cardinals' lone two wins of the day came at the fourth and fifth flights, where Christine Stromberg and Emma Retter picked up those wins in straight sets. Stromberg needed a second-set tiebreaker to get past junior Jenna Nussbaum at the fourth flight.
Falcon sophomore Stefanie Menoff continued her dominant singles play, losing a total of only three games against Katherine Rist at the sixth flight. Soph Kelsey Jakupcin also won in straight sets, losing a total of only five games against Jennifer Pollack at the third flight.
BGSU had taken the doubles point, with Kelsey Jakupcin and Nussbaum earning an 8-6 win at the top flight, and the duo of Ashley Jakupcin and Kintzel earning a third-flight win by an 8-4 outcome.
The Falcons will be in action next weekend against first-place Western Michigan, with that match scheduled for Saturday afternoon (April 14) at 1:00 p.m. in Kalamazoo. The Broncos have won 23 consecutive regular-season matches vs. MAC foes.
