Wiemer and Baca Named Great Lakes All-Region Selections

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) has announced both sophomore Hayley Wiemer and senior Jeanine Baca are members of the 2007 NFCA Louisville Slugger Great Lakes All-Region team. Baca, an outfielder, earned second team honors while Wiemer, a designated player/pitcher, is a member of the first team. Since closing the 2007 season last week Baca, Wiemer and junior Allison Vallas have earned conference, regional or district distinctions.
Prior to Baca (Complete Game-By-Game Stats) and Wiemer's (Complete Game-By-Game Stats) recognition, nine Falcons have been mentioned on the Great Lakes All-Region rosters. Of those nine, only three - Amy Lienhardt ('88), Rachelle Higfill ('93) and Gina Rango (`03-`06) - have been first team selections. Wiemer, an all-

Wiemer and Vallas (Complete Game-By-Game Stats) were also among those student-athletes elected to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team. Wiemer, an Adolescent, young adult science education major, boasts a perfect 4.00 GPA through three full semesters at Bowling Green. The Sylvania, Ohio native shared the BGSU team Co-Offensive MVP award with Vallas, another local product. The junior, a Perrysburg, Ohio native, carried a 3.93 GPA through five full semesters of classroom assignments as she works towards a degree in Physical Education/Teacher Education. The twosome were named to the Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week list a combined three times this season including twice in the month of April.
To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution (thus, true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible). In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible.

In yet another shared award for Wiemer, both she and Baca were named to the 2007 MAC All-Tournament team after BGSU complied a 2-2 post-season record beating Western Michigan (5-2) and Northern Illinois (7-1) while falling to eventual champion Eastern Michigan (7-3) and runners-up Central Michigan (2-0).
Baca, a La Habra,Calif. native, batted a team-high .615 at the tournament going 8-of-13 with four runs and an RBI. She hit a double, triple and a homerun en route to collecting 14 bases. She was walked twice while slugging (1.077) and fielding (1.000) at or over 1.000. Wiemer followed Baca's average with a .429 of her own with three runs and three hits. She was given first base a team high six times while delivering an on-base percentage of .692. From the circle, she made four appearances and pitched 18 innings. Wiemer struck out 17 batters faced and had a 1.94 ERA.
Bowling Green finished the season winning 73% of their contests and became the only team to beat their competition more than 70% of the time.
As a team, the Orange and Brown batted .272 while Wiemer (.413), Baca (.374) and Vallas (.369) led the charge from the plate. The trio combined for 111 of the 210 runs scored as well as 31 of the 53 doubles hit this season.
Additionally, the senior class will walk away from BGSU as the winningest class in Falcon history. Baca, Lauren Hoffman, Emmy Ramsey and Ashley Zirkle helped the Orange and Brown to 133 wins over the past four seasons.
