BOWLING GREEEN, Ohio and Kentucky - It's not very often that two Division I-A Football teams from the same city face-off on the field of play, but that's what's happening this weekend at Doyt Perry Stadium on the BGSU Campus - well, sort of. The Bowling Green Falcons will play host to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers this Saturday, September 29th, with kickoff scheduled for 6pm. It's Homecoming 2007 for the Falcons, and in a way, the Hilltoppers are coming home. Western Kentucky University is located in Bowling Green, Ky., and given such, this weekend's game is being labeled the "Battle of the Bowling Greens".
In the spirit of friendly competition, Brian Delehoy, BGSU Athletics' Director of Marketing & Promotions, decided to call on each city's Mayor to arrange a "Battle of the Bowling Greens" Mayoral Challenge.
"I thought we could create a distinctive buzz for the game in addition to the tradition that surrounds something like Homecoming," said Delehoy. "Both Mayors were excited about the concept when I presented it to them, so it was a no-brainer from that point to turn the concept into reality. Hopefully it's something we can continue in future years when the two schools ever compete in any sport."
The challenge consists of a "friendly wager" hinging on the outcome of Saturday's game. If the Falcons emerges victorious, then Mayor Elaine Walker of Bowling Green, Ky., will have to display a Bowling Green Falcons flag at City Hall for the duration of the following week. If Western Kentucky leaves BGSU with a win, then Mayor John Quinn of Bowling Green, Ohio, will do the same in honor of the Hilltoppers' triumph. The "losing Mayor" will also send evidence to the other in the form of a photo featuring them with the flag displayed appropriately in the background.
Both Google and Yahoo! web searches yielded results that first listed Bowling Green State University, but not far down the page was the city website for Bowling Green, Kent. Suffice it to say that there's more than just a football game on the line this Saturday at The Doyt. There are bragging rights on the line between two cities with the same name that are separated by just 400 miles.
