EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University football team fell by a 28-17 score at Michigan State University Saturday afternoon. Some notes and numbers from the game ...
* In his second career start, sophomore QB Tyler Sheehan just missed throwing for 300 yards for the second-straight week. Sheehan finished with 32 completions in 50 attempts vs. the Spartans, throwing for a total of 295 yards. Last week at Minnesota, Sheehan was 34-of-51 for 388 yards, two scores and no interceptions.
* Of Sheehan's 32 completions, 29 went to a total of just four different receivers. Freddie Barnes led the Falcons with nine catches, while Derek Brighton and Willie Geter caught seven passes apiece and Marques Parks six.
* All four of those receivers set a career best in at least one category. Barnes' nine catches topped his previous career best of six, which was set just last week at Minnesota. The redshirt sophomore has 15 receptions through two games this season, after catching a total of 20 passes during all of 2006.
* Brighton, a redshirt freshman, did not catch a pass at Minnesota, in his collegiate debut. His 18-yard reception from Sheehan in the first quarter vs. MSU was his first as a Falcon. That catch was his longest of the day, and of his brief Falcon career.
* Geter, a true freshman, set personal bests of seven catches and 41 yards receiving. He had one grab for six yards at Minnesota.
* Parks, a redshirt junior, had set career standards vs. the Golden Gophers last week, with four catches for 69 yards. He had six grabs vs. MSU to set a new personal best for the second-straight Saturday, and fell just shy of his career best in receiving yards, with 63 vs. the Spartans.
* Late in the first quarter, Sheehan found Barnes for a nine-yard completion on a fourth-and-2 play. It marked the second-straight week that the Sheehan-Barnes tandem hooked up for a first down in a fourth-down situation.
* Sheehan found sophomore Tyrone Pronty for a 23-yard touchdown pass in the first minute of the second quarter. For Pronty, a it marked his first career TD reception.
* Less than a minute after the Pronty TD, redshirt junior Adrian Baker recorded his first career interception. Sophomore D.J. Young, a native of nearby Lansing, Mich. (Sexton H.S.), tipped MSU quarterback Brian Hoyer's pass at the line of scrimmage, leading to the INT.
* The ensuing drive culminated with Sheehan's six-yard TD run on a third-and-goal play. The TD rush, which gave the Falcons the lead, was the first of Sheehan's career.
* Midway through the second quarter, redshirt junior John Haneline sacked Hoyer for a seven-yard loss. Haneline and Hoyer were teammates at St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Ohio.
* Fifth-year senior center Kory Lichtensteiger went down with an injury with 5:46 remaining in the second quarter. He missed only one play before returning.
* With the Spartans driving in the final minute of the first half, redshirt junior Erique Dozier intercepted a pass at the BGSU two-yard line, returning it 26 yards. The interception was the first of Dozier's career.
* Geter had a 17-yard run in the third quarter, the longest run of his brief career.
* With 1:37 left in the third quarter, junior transfer Sinisa Vrvilo kicked a 31-yard field goal to cut MSU's lead to 21-17. The FG was the second of Vrvilo's brief tenure at BGSU to date.
* With 2:18 left in the fourth quarter, Haneline forced a fumble by the Spartans' Javon Ringer, and redshirt soph Cody Basler made the recovery. It was the first FF in Haneline's BGSU career, and the first FR for Basler.
* Haneline, after leading the Falcons with 15 tackles last week at Minnesota, tied for team honors with 10 stops vs. the Spartans. Fifth-year senior Loren Hargrove also had 10 tackles on Saturday, more than doubling his previous career high (four).
* Haneline had 2.5 tackles for loss, after entering the MSU game with a career total of 4.5.
* BGSU has been on the Big Ten Network in every weekend of the channel's existence (two). The Falcons also were on the BTN last weekend, as the Sept. 1 win at Minnesota was televised by the network.
* The MSU game also marked the second-straight week in which the Falcons faced a Big Ten coach in his first season. Mark Dantonio is in his initial season at MSU, and Tim Brewster is in his first year at Minnesota.
