CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University junior Kelsey Jakupcin has been named the Mid-American Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday (Jan. 23). Jakupcin earns the honor for the first time this season and the second time in her Falcon career.
Jakupcin, a native of Dublin, Ohio (Bishop Watterson H.S.), earned the award after posting a pair of top-flight wins as the Falcons opened the dual-match portion of the schedule with a 5-2 win at Butler Sunday (Jan. 20).
Jakupcin, in her first career appearance at the number-one singles flight in a dual match, posted a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win over BU's Natali James. She teamed with freshman Christine Chiricosta for a 9-7 doubles win at the top flight.
The Falcons' win over Butler gives BGSU a perfect 12-0 record in the all-time series between the schools.
Jakupcin's other MAC P-O-W honor came two years ago (Feb. 7, 2006), and also came after a weekend win over Butler.
The Falcons, 1-0 on the young dual-match season, begin a six-match homestand this weekend. BGSU will host Youngstown State University in Saturday (Jan. 26) action, before facing Wright State University on Sunday (Jan. 27). Both matches will be held at Shadow Valley in Toledo.
