The Bowling Green State University football team wrapped up their fourth day in Mobile, Alabama, participating at the local children's hospital and listening to Joe Theismann speak at the Mayor's banquet Friday night. Game night is almost here.
In the morning selected players passed out gifts at a local children's hospital, visiting with 10-12 kids from the age of 6-16, and another dozen children under the age of three.
Later that night over 1,000 people attended the mayor's banquet, including all members from both BGSU and Tulsa. Several awards were passed out (including a special award to Mike Wilcox--read below), with the night highlighted by a speech from Joe Theismann. The Super Bowl champion talked about the injury that linked him and Lawrence Taylor together as well as how his pronunciation of his last name changed.
MOBILE, ALA.-A successful Toledo businessman and former Bowling Green State University athlete has been presented a Champion of Life award by the GMAC Bowl and GMAC Financial Services.
Michael R. Wilcox, CEO of Wilcox Financial, diversified financial services and consulting firm in Toledo, was honored during the Mayor's Banquet Friday (Jan. 4) in Mobile. The banquet is one of a number of events surrounding the annual GMAC Bowl in that city, where BGSU will take on Tulsa Sunday (Jan. 6). Champion of Life honorees are "individuals who have achieved great success in their chosen field through dedication and hard work. They have overcome the many obstacles that have stood in the path of success and have given a great deal back to the community and country."
As an undergraduate, Wilcox served as student representative to the University Board of Trustees, as well as president of the Interfraternity Council. He played on the hockey team, was a two-time captain of BGSU's nationally ranked lacrosse team and was named a lacrosse All-American for three consecutive years. He was inducted into the BGSU Athletic Hall of Fame and the Ohio Lacrosse Hall of Fame, as well as the Peddie School and Ithaca High School athletic halls of fame.
Wilcox, who was appointed to the BGSU Board of Trustees in 1999 for a term ending in 2008, is immediate past chairman of the board. He serves as a trustee of the Culver Academies, the Toledo Symphony and the Toledo Hospital Foundation, and is chairman of the board of the U.S. Lacrosse Foundation. A past member of the BGSU Foundation, Inc., he is a member of the BGSU Presidents and Falcon clubs.
Wilcox and his wife, Jan, also a BGSU graduate, reside in Toledo.
Hello Falcons; We just wrapped day number four of the GMAC Bowl stay. Today was another eventful day for not only the team, but for the rest of the University members. Another plane full of Falcons arrived today and were there to support the team at the Mayor's Banquet tonight. The Banquet was the conclusion of an eventful day.
Our morning started early at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). We had breakfast at 7 am. Both teams came together to listen to Jake Peavy speak. He was a very classy and articulate man, who did a great job sharing his faith and life story. We were all interested to hear he was a Mobile native. I am finding out over and over again just how many great athletes this town produces.
Walking around in the mall across the street from our hotel, a bunch of us ran into West Virginia's quarterback Pat White. I asked him what he was doing here and he said he is from Mobile and was back for a while after their domination of Oklahoma. He was a very nice guy.
All and all, the trip is still going great! The whole team is starting to get into game mode with our preparation and attitude.
The Mayor's Banquet tonight set the stage for the game Sunday night. The band was good and loud and the cheerleaders were getting our croud into it. Joe Theismann delivered a comical and well thought out message. Anyway, hope to see you all soon.
Go Falcons!
Kory
