KALAMAZOO, Mich. (BGSUFalcons.com) - Host Western Michigan University scored midway through the first half to take the lead for good, en route to a 3-0 win over the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 15). The Mid-American Conference match was held at the WMU Soccer Complex.
With the win, the Broncos improve to 3-10-1 overall and 2-1-0 in MAC play. The Falcons drop to 3-8-1 and 0-3-0, respectively.
"It just wasn't our day today," said Falcon head coach Fred Thompson. "We came up against a WMU team that were trying to find their way, and they worked very hard. They worked for each other, and they pulled together in a home MAC game.
"On our side, the ball just wouldn't bounce for us today. We had opportunities to tie the game -- we hit the crossbar, had some balls cleared off the line -- but it just didn't happen for us today. We created enough chances, but we just couldn't get the ball across the line today."
Sam Meyer led the Broncos with a goal and two assists, with Andrew Gasiorek adding a goal and an assist. Saeed Sulemana Baba also scored for the hosts.
Gasiorek scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 26:09 mark of the opening half. Off of a restart. Doug Raak played the ball from the right side and Meyer redirected on to Gasiorek, who flicked it in with his foot for his first goal of the season.
Both teams took four shots in that opening period, with the home team taking that 1-0 lead into the intermission. The Falcons fired three shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half, outshooting the Broncos by a 7-5 count in the half. BG could not score the equalizer, however, and Western doubled the lead with just under 18 minutes remaining on a goal by Sulemana Baba.
Meyer, who was credited with assists on the first two goals, found the back of the net himself in the 83rd minute. Gasiorek played the ball into open space to send Meyer in on a breakaway, and Meyer converted for a three-goal lead.
BGSU outshot the hosts, 11-9, but the Broncos had five shots on goal to the Falcons' one. Sophomore Dusko Topolic had a game-high four shot attempts, including one offering that ricocheted off the crossbar in the 79th minute.
WMU goalkeeper Paul Lewis had one save in earning the win, while senior Paul Shoemaker had two stops for the visitors.
"All we can do now is go back and regroup, and get ready for Sunday's game," said Thompson. "Every MAC game is important, and we need to be ready to go on Sunday morning."
Sunday's game will be against Florida Atlantic University, a MAC affiliate for men's soccer. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. in Boca Raton, Fla. FAU is coming off a 2-1 overtime win at Duke on Tuesday night.
