BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Visiting Michigan State University scored on the first two shots of the game, setting the tone in a 4-0 win over the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team. The non-conference match was held at Cochrane Field Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 29).
With the win, the nationally-ranked Spartans improve to 10-5-1 on the season, while the Falcons fall to 4-11-1. MSU is ranked #25 in the country in the latest NSCAA/adidas poll.
Louis Stephens III scored a pair of goals for the Spartans, while Jeff Ricondo and Doug DeMartin each found the back of the net as well. DeMartin's goal was his 15th, ranking him among the national leaders.
Avery Steinlage picked up the win in goal, making five saves in just over 74 minutes. Jeremy Clark had one save for the visitors in his relief effort.
For the Falcons, senior Brent Petkus made seven stops.
The Spartans got on the board with just 2:54 gone. Ben Pirmann, who had assists on the first two goals, took the ball to the end line on the left side of the penalty area. Pirmann played a pass back to Stephens, near the left edge of the six-yard box, who one-timed it home.
Three minutes later, Ricondo headed home Pirmann's corner kick, and the lead was two goals.
Stephens picked up his second goal of the day on a header, knocking in a cross by Cyrus Saydee two-thirds of the way through the opening half, and the Spartans took that three-goal lead into the intermission.
The lone goal of the second half came off the boot of DeMartin. After Spencer Thompson put him behind the defense with a through-ball near midfield, DeMartin dribbled the ball roughly 30 yards, taking it into the box and blasting a shot into the roof of the net. DeMartin had a game-high four shots, putting three on goal.
Junior Tyler Deal and redshirt freshman Robert Barker led the Falcons with three shot attempts each, and Deal had a pair of shots on goal to lead the Brown and Orange.
MSU had a 14-12 advantage in shots and a 12-6 margin in SOG. The game featured 25 fouls and five yellow cards.
The Falcons will close the home portion of the 2008 schedule Saturday morning (Nov. 1), hosting the University at Buffalo. Kickoff is at 11:00 a.m., with 'Senior Day' festivities preceding the match. BGSU's four seniors are Petkus, Ryan Davis, Kyle McNayr and Paul Shoemaker.
