ONEONTA, N.Y. (BGSUFalcons.com) - Hartwick College scored a pair of first-half goals off of corner kicks, posting a 2-0 win over the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team Saturday night (Oct. 4). The game, the Mid-American Conference opener for both sides, was held at Elmore Field.
With the win, the Hawks improved to 3-3-4 overall, while the Falcons are now 3-6-1 on the season.
HC's Owen Botting scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal at the 31:42 mark, as his corner kick found the net for a 1-0 lead. Then, shortly before halftime, another Botting CK led to another goal for the hosts.
On the latter goal, Liam Parrington headed home the Botting ball, giving the Hawks a two-goal lead.
The home team was credited with margins of 17-10 in total shots and 11-7 in shots on goal.
"This was a very evenly-played game," said BGSU head coach Fred Thompson. "It was a good performance by both teams. They were able to jump ahead off of two corner kicks that they executed very well.
"We fought back, but couldn't quite get the finishing touch we needed to give us some momentum or get us over the hump."
Senior goalkeeper Paul Shoemaker made eight saves in his complete-game effort, while the Falcons were credited with one 'team save' as well. The Hawks' Jeremy Vuolo had seven saves to pick up the win.
"We know that every game in the MAC is going to be tough," said Thompson. "Hartwick was very solid in the midfield, and they are very quick on the counterattack.
"Outside of those two set pieces, though, we were solid in the back, and we created some chances ourselves. We just didn't quite get the luck of the bounce, and we're going to have to keep working at creating that luck."
The Falcons, after playing eight of the season's first 10 games away from home, return home for the next contest. BGSU will have a week to prepare for nationally-ranked Akron, who will come to Cochrane Field next Saturday, Oct. 11, for a 1:00 p.m. game.
NOTES
* Hartwick has won three consecutive games at home ... the Hawks are 3-0-1 at Elmore Field this season and 6-1-4 at home since the start of the 2007 season.
* Senior goalkeeper Paul Shoemaker's total of eight saves was a season high ... he had seven stops in the 2008 opener at South Florida (Aug. 30), and has had six saves in three other games this year to date.
* Shoemaker now has a total of 50 saves this season.
* From the "this is very likely a school record, but we have no way to know for sure" department ... Shoemaker -- the goalkeeper -- was credited with a shot on goal for the fourth consecutive game ... he now has four career shots, with all four on target ... Shoemaker scored a goal on one of those shots, on a penalty kick in last Saturday's (Sept. 27) Marshall match.
