BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University softball head coach Shannon Salsburg and the Falcons announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Andrea Arney (Navarre, Ohio), Paige Berger (Rootstown, Ohio), Hannah Fulk (Jeromesville, Ohio) and Jessica Odell (Wichita, Kansas) will join the Falcons during the 2009-10 academic year.
"We are very excited to announce our 2009 class," said head coach Shannon Salsburg. "This class epitomizes what it means to be a student-athlete. As a class, they will come to us with a combined GPA of 3.87. On the field, the 2009 class will add depth, speed, and athleticism to our squad while instantly providing additional offensive weapons to our mix."
Arney, currently a senior at Fairless High School, has the possibility of several roles on the field for the Falcons as either a middle infielder or outfielder. She plays travel softball for the Ohio Wolfpack Black and will not be the first of her family to don the Orange and Brown as she will be joining her older sister Lindsday, currently a sophomore on Salsburg's squad.
"We are excited to have Andrea join our softball family," state Salsburg. "Andrea is an explosive player who will add speed and athleticism to our middle infield and outfield. She is also a fantastic offensive player, who has the ability to bunt for a hit one at-bat and then hit a triple the next."
Berger, a middle infielder, is currently a senior at Rootstown High School. She is also a teammate of Arney's on the Ohio Wolfpack Black travel team.
"Paige comes to us as a young lady who can flat out hit the ball," said Salsburg. "She is a power hitter, who will compete for a spot in the middle infield. Paige is a tremendous student of the game, and we look forward to watching her continued growth here as a Falcon."
Fulk, a possible third basemen or middle infielder is currently a senior at Hillsdale High School. She has played travel softball for the Ohio Wolfpack as well as the Lady Lasers.
"We are very happy to have Hannah join our family," state Salsburg. "Hannah comes to us with the skills and athleticism to play anywhere on the field. She will compete in the infield, where she will showcase her speed and cannon of an arm. Hannah is also an exciting offensive player, who can change the game with both her stick and her speed."
Odell, the only pitcher in the quartet of '09 student-athletes, is currently a senior at Wichita Northwest High School. She plays travel softball for the Wichita Mustangs Gold.
"We are thrilled to have Jessica become the newest member of the Falcon pitching staff," said Salsburg. "Jessica is a young lady with a world of potential in the circle. We believe that she will add much needed depth to our pitching staff while her experience at the gold level will help her transition into the collegiate ranks."
Salsburg and the Falcons will open the 2009 season on February 13 against North Florida, in their first ever meeting in program history, at the UCF Early Bird Tournament in Orlando, Florida.
