
Falcons Upset Chippewas, 3-1 in Quarterfinal Match-Up

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball head coach Denise Van De Walle and the #5 Falcons upset the #4 Central Michigan Chippewas this afternoon (Nov. 21), 3-1 (25-20, 18-25, 25-18, 25-18).
The Chippewas came out strong in the first set taking an early four point lead, 6-2 after a CMU four-point run. A Meghan Mohr kill put a stop to the Chips as she terminated play leading to four straight points for the Falcons tying the set up 6-6. The Falcons then came back to string together another three points to take a 10-8 lead over the Chippewas. The set remained close with the Falcons ahead until BG posted back-to-back three point runs to extend their lead to seven, 19-12. The Chippewas didn't give up putting together a late three-point run to come within four of the Falcons, 23-19. Corey Domek sided-out for the Falcons with a kill to secure set point, but once again the Chips were able to side-out. The Falcons answered right back as Domek ended the set with yet another kill giving the Falcons the first set, 25-20.
The Falcons opened the second set with a kill from Domek to put BG on the scoreboard first. The Chippewas came back to score three straight points and capture the lead. The Chippewas held their leading extending it to six, 13-7 after a four-point run. The Falcons then cut the Chippewas lead to three, 16-13 after a three-point run started by a kill from Mohr. CMU answered back with their own three-point run to once again take a six point lead, 19-13. The Chippewas put together one more three-point run to secure set point, 24-16. The Falcons fought off two set points but didn't have enough to overcome the Chippewas in the second set falling, 25-18.
The Chippewas were able to score the first two points of the third set but then BG stopped CMU from scoring points in a row. The Falcons put together their first big run with five straight points to take a five point lead, 12-7, which was sparked by a kill from Domek. The Falcons extended their lead to seven after a three-point run, 19-12. The Chippewas didn't give up but BG stayed aggressive and secure set point off of a kill from Shari Luther. The Chippewas were able to fight off one set point but a kill from Kaitlin Jackson ended the third set, 25-18.
The Chippewas struck early in the fourth set taking an 8-5 lead after two three-point runs. The Falcons answered back with a four-point run to take a 9-8 lead, which BG would maintain the rest of the set. The Falcons continued to score points in a row and after consecutive runs, first a four-point run followed up by a five-point run BG took a nine point lead, 21-12. The Chippewas fought back with a three-point run to cut BG's lead to six, 21-15 but the Falcons never let down as they won the fourth set 25-18.
The Falcons were firing on all cylinders getting everyone involved on offense with four players hitting a .300 hitting percentage or better and three players with double-digit kill performances. Leading the Falcon attacked was Domek with a match high 20 kills and a .350 hitting percentage. Right behind her was Mohr terminating 19 kills and a .359 hitting percentage. Rounding out the Falcons in double-digits on offense was Kendra Halm with 11 kills and only three errors, hitting a .320. Sam Fish ran the offense for the Orange and Brown with 59 assists to go along with three kills and no errors for a hitting a .300.
The Falcon defensive was relentless with four players in double-digits. Leading the way was Chelsey Meek with 22 digs, set a new BG record for digs in a season now with 644 on the season. Meek broke the BG record she set last season of 629 digs. Also in double digits on defense were Susie Isphording with 13 digs and Alex Zlabis and Mohr with 11 each.
Mohr's 19 kills and 11 digs gave her second consecutive double-double and 11th of the season.
The Falcons now 25-8 will take on the #1 Western Michigan Broncos on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in the MAC Tournament semifinals.
The Falcons will make their 12th appearance in the MAC Tournament semifinals with an overall record of 6-5. The Falcon are 3-2 overall against the Broncos in the MAC Tournament and 2-0 against them in the MAC Tournament semifinals.
