BGSU Heads to Detroit for Tuesday Tilt

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team has one final tuneup prior to the Mid-American Conference Tournament ... the Falcons of head coach Fred Thompson will head to the Motor City for a Tuesday (Nov. 4) match against the University of Detroit Mercy ... kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at UDM's Titan Field ... then, the Brown and Orange will prepare for a quarterfinal match in the conference tournament ... BGSU will open tourney action on Thursday, Nov. 13, against an opponent to be determined.

MAC TOURNAMENT INFORMATION
Following Tuesday's UDM match, the Falcons, as mentioned, will play a MAC Tournament quarterfinal-round match nine days later ... all seven teams qualify for the MAC Tournament, with the regular-season champion hosting the entire tourney and earning a first-round bye ... Akron is that top-seeded team, having clinched the MAC regular-season crown ... BGSU will be seeded seventh for the tourney, and will play the #2 seed on Thursday, Nov. 13, at UA's Lee Jackson Field ... with several MAC regular-season matches taking place this week, the Falcons' opponent is not yet known ... BG could face either Buffalo, Northern Illinois or Western Michigan in the opening round.
LAWRENCE NAMED TO ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAM
Junior Jacob Lawrence has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV First Team, it was announced Thursday (Oct. 30) ... Lawrence, a native of Brandon, Miss., earns the honor for the first time in his career ... he has played in 15 matches this season, making 14 starts, and is tied for the team scoring lead with eight points ... Lawrence's total of four goals paces the Falcons in that category, and hs is tied for the team lead with a pair of game-winning goals ... Lawrence maintains a 3.90 cumulative grade-point average as a psychology major ... the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee ... to be nominated, a student-athlete must hold at least sophomore status, be a starter or key reserve and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher.
PALMISANO ENDOWMENT ANNOUNCED
BGSU's men's soccer family has come together to honor a former Falcon playing and coaching great ... the Gary Palmisano Soccer Endowment was formally announced at halftime of Saturday's (Nov. 1) game vs. Buffalo ... the late Palmisano was a standout goalkeeper for coach Mickey Cochrane, helping lead the Falcons to NCAA bids in 1972 and '73 ... he served as an assistant coach under Cochrane before taking the reins in 1978 ... in his 16 seasons, Palmisano had a head-coaching record of 172-97-25, and he also was a driving force behind soccer being recognized as a MAC sport beginning in 1993 ... this past summer, many former players made gifts to complete the endowment ... the first scholarship in Gary's name is set to be awarded in the fall of 2009 ... Palmisano's daughter, Caroline, a BGSU student, was on hand for Saturday's announcement.

The Falcons enter the Detroit game with a record of 4-12-1 on the season ... BGSU finished MAC play with a league ledger of 0-6-0 ... BG started the year with three shutout losses, then won the next three matches ... that win streak included a pair of come-from-behind victories at the Central Arkansas Tournament (over Centenary and the host school) and a home win over IPFW ... after a loss to Saint Francis (Pa.), BGSU battled Marshall to a 3-3 tie in late September ... then, however, the Falcons suffered through a seven-game winless streak ... BG broke that streak in a big way, with a 3-0 home win over Wright State (Oct. 22), but has dropped games to Northern Illinois, nationally-ranked Michigan State and Buffalo since that time ... individually, junior Jacob Lawrence leads the team with four goals, and is tied with classmate Cameron Hepple in points ... both players have eight points this year to date ... Hepple has a pair of goals and a team-leading four assists this fall ... another junior, Chuko Evwaraye, has six points on three goals ... senior Paul Shoemaker, sophomore Thomas McLean and freshman Byard Ebling each have four points this year ... A POSTGAME CEREMONY, TOO
Saturday (Nov. 1) was a pretty big day for senior Ryan Davis ... in addition to the 'Senior Day' festivities prior to the game vs. Buffalo, Davis was involved in a postgame ceremony as well ... with the majority of the fans still remaining in the bleachers, Davis proposed to his girlfriend, Stephanie Guigou, on the field after his final home game.
THE OPPONENT / THE SERIES
Detroit, like BGSU, enters Tuesday's match with an overall record of 4-12-1 ... and, like the Falcons, the Titans will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak ... UDM closed the Horizon League portion of the schedule with a mark of 1-6-1 ... the Titans dropped a 3-1 home decision to Butler on Friday (Oct. 31) before falling, 3-0, at Valparaiso on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 2) ... UDM is 2-5-1 at home this year to date ... individually, Renato Susnja and Nick Dreshaj each have eight points to lead a balanced scoring attack ... Dreshaj has a team-high four assists ... Susnja, Sam Seppo and Adam Philp each have three goals to tie for the team lead in that category ... The Falcons lead Detroit, 14-5-1, in the all-time series between the teams, and BGSU has won the last two meetings ... last year, BG posted a 2-1 home win over the Titans (Oct. 24, 2007), as Hunter Van Houten had a goal and an assist and Brent Petkus made four saves ... in the Falcons' last road game vs. UDM, two years ago (Oct. 3, 2006), Paul Shoemaker picked up his first shutout, making four stops in a 3-0 win ... Cameron Hepple scored BGSU's final goal of the day ... BG is 6-4-0 in road games vs. the Titans, with the 2006 game snapping a two-game road losing streak in the series ... SHOEMAKER SIXTH IN SAVES
With six saves in the Buffalo game, senior goalkeeper Paul Shoemaker now has a total of 64 this season to date ... the Commerce, Mich., native is only the fifth 'keeper in school history to have 50 or more stops in four seasons ... Shoemaker now has a total of 257 career saves at BGSU, ranking sixth in school history.
FALCON NOTES
• BGSU's total of three goals in the Wright State game tied a season high ... the Falcons also scored three times in both the Centenary (Sept. 12) and Marshall (Sept. 27) games.
• Junior Chuko Evwaraye's goal vs. the Raiders was his third of the year ... he is second on the team behind classmate Jacob Lawrence (four).
• Evwaraye's goal also was his second game winner of the season, tying him for the team lead with Lawrence in that category.
• Evwaraye has six career goals ... five of those six have been game winners ... his only career goal that was not a GWG came vs. Centenary, when he scored the Falcons' first goal of that game to start a comeback from a two-goal deficit ... Evwaraye completed that rally with the GWG in that 3-2 victory.
• Junior Cameron Hepple had an assist on Evwaraye's goal ... Hepple has eight points, and is tied with Lawrence for the team lead in that category ... Hepple leads the Falcons with four assists on the year.
• Hepple has eight career assists ... he is BG's active career leader in goals (seven), assists and points (22).
• Freshman Byard Ebling and sophomore Thomas McLean each recorded their second goal of the season in the win over WSU ... Ebling's first career goal had come at Marshall (Sept. 27), while McLean scored in the Falcons' home opener vs. IPFW (Sept. 19).
• Senior goalkeeper Brent Petkus picked up his first shutout of the year and the second of his career in that WSU game ... his other complete-game shutout came in a scoreless tie vs. IPFW last fall (Oct. 7, 2007) at Cochrane Field.
• Entering the Detroit game, a total of 20 different Falcons have started at least one game this season.
