BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University men's soccer head coach Fred Thompson has announced his resignation, effective immediately. BGSU Assistant Vice President/Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Greg Christopher made the announcement Monday afternoon (Dec. 1).
"We thank Coach Thompson for his contributions to the BGSU men's soccer program over the past five years," said Christopher. "We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors."
Thompson, who recently completed his fifth season as the Falcons' head coach, had an overall record of 18-69-8 at BGSU. The 2008 team concluded the season with a record of 4-13-2.
"It's been a great opportunity to coach at BGSU, and I have enjoyed my time here immensely," said Thompson. "Now, I feel it's time for me to move on to a new chapter in my professional life.
"I have been privileged to coach some very good players, and more importantly, to have gotten to know some exceptional men. BG will always have a special place in my heart."
Thompson, only the fourth head coach in BGSU men's soccer history, came to BG after two seasons as assistant coach at the University of Evansville. Prior to that, he served as head coach at Bellevue (Wash.) Community College in 2000 and 2001, with a 28-8-6 record and a league title.
A standout player at George Mason University, Thompson played professionally for eight years, with the Baltimore Blast of the MISL, Tacoma Stars of the MSL and the Sacramento Knights of the CISL. Additionally, Thompson was the starting sweeper for the Jamaica National Team from 1988-90.
A native of Jamaica, Thompson grew up in Mississauga, Ontario. He is a 1987 graduate of GMU.
A national search for Thompson's replacement will begin immediately.
