Central Arkansas' Brian Marks tipped in a missed shot with 0.2 seconds left as the Bears remained undefeated at home and beat the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team 67-65 Saturday evening.
Bowling Green seemingly took control with a 19-8 run midway through the second half to build a 60-49 lead but the Falcons scored just five points over the final 8:17 of the contest. Joe Jakubowski and Brian Moten combined for 11 points during the stretch, but Central Arkansas battled right back with six consecutive points to make it close again.
Trailing 63-59 with 2:57 to go, UCA scored the next six points behind three free-throws from Brooks Taylor and a three-point play by Mitch Rueter. Moten's three-pointer with 58 seconds left came up just short, but Nate Miller stole a pass on the interior and was fouled with 18 seconds left.
Miller had made just 4-of-14 free-throws on the season when he stepped to the line with the chance to tie the game and he knocked down both to tie the score at 65-65. The Bears worked the clock down and Marcus Pillow missed a jumper, followed by a missed tipped by Chris Brown, before Marks' tip with 0.2 seconds left kissed off the glass for the win.
As has been the case for most of the season, Bowling Green's defensive intensity kept the Falcons in the game. Central Arkansas shot just 37 percent for the game and made only 5-of-19 three-pointers. BGSU also held a 35-30 rebounding advantage and shot 46 percent from the floor, making 8-of-17 three-pointers.
Moten led BGSU with 18 points, making four three-pointers, and Miller added 12 points, four rebounds and four assists.
UCA was helped by a 22-of-26 night from the free-throw line and only four turnovers. Taylor had a career-high 22 points and Marcus Pillow added 17.
Bowling Green jumped out to a quick lead to start the game behind Moten. He knocked down a three-pointer on the first possession of the game and then completed a three-point play on the team's second possession as the Falcons took an early 10-2 lead. With BG holding a 10-4 lead, Jakubowski picked up two fouls and was relegated to cheering duty for the remainder of the half.
Jakubowski played just five minutes in the first half but freshman Dee Brown scored eight points in the first half, equaling his career high, to keep Central Arkansas from taking the lead with the Falcons' floor general on the bench. He made 3-of-4 shots and both of his three-point attempts during the period.
Central Arkansas improves to 6-4 on the year, while Bowling Green falls to 4-5. The Falcons will have a quick turnaround, hosting Towson Monday at 7 p.m. BGSU is 2-0 at home in Anderson Arena on the season.
