Senior guard Darryl Clements had a career-high eight assists and the Bowling Green men's basketball team dished out a season-high 25 on 30 baskets as the Falcons rolled past Towson 77-58 Monday night at Anderson Arena. Clements added a team-high 18 points and six rebounds to post a monster night.
Bowling Green jumped out early and never looked back, flashing a killer instinct that has been missing at times on the road. The Falcons improved to 3-0 in Anderson Arena this year (as well as 2-0 in neutral site games) but are yet to pick up a victory in five road contests. BG shot a season-high 56 percent from the floor, including 65 percent in the second half as the Falcons thoroughly picked apart Towson's defense.
Joe Jakubowski and Nate Miller added four assists each and center Otis Polk had a career high three assists to go with seven points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Chris Knight came off the bench to score 13 points in 18 minutes and Brian Moten added 12 points, making 5-of-8 shots. The Falcons dominated the paint, holding a 38-18 scoring edge inside.
Towson jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first five points of the game, but Bowling Green took the lead for good on a Clements fastbreak jumper at 12-11. That bucket came in the midst of a 17-3 run that put the Falcons on top 26-14 when the dust settled. Freshman Dee Brown connected on a pair of three-pointers during the stretch, adding to his perfect 2-for-2 game from long range two nights ago and improving to 9-for-17 (53 percent) on the season.
After taking a 36-27 lead into the halftime break, BG effectively put the game away with a strong push to start the second half. Moten knocked down a three-pointer and a jumper to put the Falcons ahead by 14 and Towson never got closer than 12 the rest of the way.
BG's defense once again was a catalyst as the Falcons held Towson to just 34 percent shooting, the third consecutive game in which an opponent has shot 37 percent or less. The Tigers were also hounded on three-point attempts, making just 6-of-24 (25 percent). Both teams committed just eight turnovers and Towson had only one steal on the evening.
Towson did get a solid outing from Junior Hairston, who finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots for a double-double. David Brewster came off the bench to score 13 and was the only other player in double figures.
Towson drops to 5-6 with the loss and Bowling Green improves to 5-5. The Falcons will have six days off before hosting Eastern Illinois Sunday at 2 p.m.
