TOLEDO, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team lost the doubles point to begin the afternoon, but rallied back to post a 4-3 win over Indiana State University Sunday (Feb. 10). The non-conference dual match was held at Shadow Valley in Toledo.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to a perfect 5-0 in dual-match play this season. The start is BGSU's best in a quarter century.
"This was a great win," said BGSU coach Penny Dean. "We were able to build on yesterday's win, and we did a nice job of responding after losing the doubles point.
"I'm very proud of the girls for staying upbeat and positive after falling behind. Then, we had to take Sam (Kintzel) out of the lineup due to illness, but everyone responded by going out there and giving it their all in singles play."
The Sycamores took two of the three doubles matches, with the sophomore tandem of Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel picking up the Falcons' lone win, at the third flight.
The Falcons entered singles action needing wins in four of the six flights, and BGSU got exactly that. At the top flight, junior Kelsey Jakupcin posted an impressive victory, downing ISU's Jennifer Migan in straight sets by identical 6-4 scores. Migan was ranked fourth in the Midwest Region and 49th in the nation in singles in the last ITA rankings.
"Kelsey's win, in particular, was impressive today," said Dean. "She beat a nationally-ranked opponent in straight sets. That was key in our comeback, and in her continued development. As a team, we played tough tennis and were able to come back and get the win."
Babina completed her undefeated day by making quick work of ISU's Joanne Schickerling at the third flight. Babina dropped just three total games in her two sets, with a 6-1, 6-2 win.
With Kintzel sitting out of the singles portion of the match due to illness, junior Stefanie Menoff moved into the fourth spot in the lineup. Menoff dropped her first set to Fadzai Masiyazi, but rallied back for a three-set win.
Senior co-captain Andrea Volle also picked up a singles win, topping Marie Caujolle in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) at the fifth flight.
Freshman Christine Chiricosta lost a close match at the second level, with both of her sets vs. Sarah Meghoufel requiring a tiebreaker. Meghoufel captured the first 'breaker by a 7-5 result, and the second by a 7-4 count.
The Falcons will be back in action next weekend, with two more matches at Shadow Valley. BGSU will meet Detroit in a Friday-evening (Feb. 15) match, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Then, the Falcons will close a six-match homestand with Saturday's (Feb. 16) contest vs. Duquesne, starting at 1:00 p.m.
NOTES
* BGSU's 5-0 start to the season is the Falcons' best in 25 years, since the 1982-83 team began the year with a 6-0 mark ... the best start in school history was 10-0 by the Janet Parks-coached 1973-74 team.
* BGSU now has won 12 consecutive dual matches at Shadow Valley, and the team is 26-1 at the facility over the last three-plus years ... BG went 6-0 at Shadow Valley in the 2004-05 season, 8-1 in '05-06 and a perfect 8-0 last year before beginning this season with a 4-0 mark at the venue.
* The Falcons now have won 23-straight non-conference dual matches at Shadow Valley ... BGSU's last loss to a non-MAC foe came over four years ago, vs. DePaul on Feb. 6, 2004.
* BGSU now leads the all-time series with Indiana State, 8-5.
* Sophomore Samantha Kintzel's doubles win on Sunday gives her a team-leading total of 24 victories this year ... Kintzel is 24-7 overall (11-3 singles, 13-4 doubles).
* Junior Stefanie Menoff's singles win gives her a career singles mark of 52-12 ... Menoff, BGSU's active career leader in that category, is 15th in the school's career singles wins list.
* Classmate Kelsey Jakupcin also ranks among the top 20 in school history on that chart ... Jakupcin has 47 singles wins as a Falcon, good for 17th place.
* Jakupcin's win was her 90th overall career victory (47 singles, 43 doubles) ... she has moved into a tie with Susie Schoenberger (2002-05) for 17th place on that BGSU list.
* Jakupcin is a perfect 5-0 in dual-match singles play, all at the top flight, this season to date.
* The doubles team of Jakupcin and freshman Christine Chiricosta lost for the first time on Sunday ... the Chiricosta/Jakupcin duo is now 6-1 on the season, including a 4-1 mark at the #1 flight in dual-match play.
