TOLEDO, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team remained undefeated with a 5-2 win over the University of Detroit Mercy Friday night (Feb. 15). The non-conference dual was held at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 6-0 in dual-match action this spring. The Titans drop to 2-4 this year to date.
"It was a good, well-fought match," said Falcon head coach Penny Dean. "We really came out fired up and ready to go."
The Falcons captured the doubles point, winning each match. Freshman Christine Chiricosta teamed with junior Kelsey Jakupcin for a win at the top flight, and BGSU's other tandems -- the senior duo of co-captains Jenna Nussbaum and Andrea Volle, and the sophomore class of Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel -- were victorious at the second and third flights, respectively.
Juniors Libby Harrison and Stefanie Menoff also won in doubles, in a match that did not count in the final scoring.
In singles action, the Falcons posted three straight-sets wins among the top-six flights. And, Jakupcin won at the top flight when UDM's Annie Moore was forced to retire due to injury.
At flight number two, Chiricosta rallied in impressive fashion to defeat the Titans' Svetlana Flankova. Down, 5-2, in the first set, the Falcon freshman won 11 consecutive games to win the match (7-5, 6-0).
Volle lost just three total games in her straight-sets win over Erin Weldon at the fifth flight. Menoff did her one better, losing only two total games at flight six in a win over Kelly Davis.
"It was a good win for us," said Dean. "We got off to a solid start, hitting the ball well in doubles, and used that success to carry over into singles play. Now, we will look to continue that success tomorrow afternoon."
The Falcons conclude a six-match homestand Saturday afternoon (Feb. 16), returning to Shadow Valley for a 1:00 p.m. match vs. Duquesne.
