CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University junior Kelsey Jakupcin has been named the Mid-American Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday (Feb. 13). Jakupcin earns the honor for the second time this season and the third time in her Falcon career.
Jakupcin, a native of Dublin, Ohio (Bishop Watterson H.S.), earned the award after posting a pair of top-flight wins as the Falcons improved to 5-0 in the dual-match portion of the schedule.
BGSU's 5-0 start is the team's best in 25 years.
Jakupcin won both of her matches in Saturday's (Feb. 9) 6-1 BG victory over UIC. She came back from a first-set loss to down the Flames' Ilinca Cristescu in a third-set tiebreaker at the top singles flight, and teamed with freshman Christine Chiricosta for a win at the number-one doubles flight.
The next day (Feb. 10), Jakupcin posted a win over a nationally-ranked opponent in straight sets. She downed Indiana State's Jennifer Migan -- ranked fourth in the Midwest Region and 49th in the nation in the most recent ITA rankings -- by a 6-4, 6-4 count, helping BG to a 4-3 win over the Sycamores.
Jakupcin also was named the MAC Player of the Week three weeks ago (Jan. 23). Her first P-O-W honor came two years ago (Feb. 7, 2006).
Jakupcin, just a junior, already ranks 17th on the BGSU career singles win list, with 47. She is tied for 17th in school history with 90 overall career wins (47 singles, 43 doubles).
This season, Jakupcin has 19 total wins. She is 8-5 in singles action and 11-6 in doubles play to date.
The Falcons conclude a six-match homestand this weekend. BGSU will host Detroit in Friday action (Feb. 15), beginning at 6:00 p.m., before facing Duquesne the following afternoon (Feb. 16) at 1:00 p.m. Both matches will be held at Shadow Valley in Toledo.
