TOLEDO, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team used a familiar formula for success. For the second match in a row, the Falcons won three doubles matches to take an early lead, then captured four-of-six singles flights for a 5-2 win. On Saturday (Feb. 16), the opponent was Duquesne University, as the Falcons completed a perfect homestand at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
BGSU completed the homestand with a 6-0 record, improving to 7-0 on the dual-match season to date. The Dukes drop to 3-3.
As was the case in Friday's (Feb. 15) win over Detroit, the Falcons swept all three doubles contests. Junior Kelsey Jakupcin and freshman Christine Chiricosta won in convincing fashion, 8-1, at the top flight, while the other two BG teams posted 8-3 wins. The Falcons' second-flight duo consisted of senior co-captains Jenna Nussbaum and Andrea Volle, while the team's two sophomores, Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel, won at the third flight.
In singles play, Chiricosta dropped just one game in a straight-sets sweep of DU's Johanna Bezjak at the second flight. Babina posted a sweep at the third flight, downing Rachel McGowan.
Volle, like Chiricosta, lost only one total game in dispatching of Andrea Sailor at the fifth flight, while junior Stefanie Menoff lost just two games in her sixth-flight win over Lanna Buehler. Chiricosta, Volle and Menoff each won by identical 6-0 scores in their second sets.
The Falcons hit the road for the next six matches, beginning with a trip to the Queen City next weekend. BGSU will face Cincinnati (Feb. 23) and Xavier (Feb. 24) on that trip. The next home match for the Brown and Orange will be on March 29 vs. Northern Illinois.
