BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Bowling Green State University baseball team opened its 2008 season on Friday afternoon (Feb. 22), dropping an 11-4 decision to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers amid temperatures that never reached above 38 degrees.
BGSU'starting pitcher Nick Cantrell was perfect through 2.2 innings before he committed a costly error, which would eventually plate four unearned Hilltopper runs.
After allowing two more runs in the fourth, the Falcons answered back with a two out rally in the top of the sixth. Brandon McFarland drew a walk, followed by a single to right by Derek Spencer, while junior Travis Owens hit a ground ball through WKU's first baseman (ruled an error) that scored McFarland.
WKU scored one in the sixth, three in the seventh and one more in the eighth to stretch their lead to 11-1, before the Falcons scored three runs of their own in the top of the ninth.
Freshman Clay Duncan was struck by a pitch to open the ninth. Chris Gacom and Dennis Vaughn followed with singles to load the bases with no outs. Duncan strolled home moments later on a balk call, and Frank Berry was struck by a wayward pitch to once again load the bases with Falcons. Marty Baird picked up his first RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to right field and David Borcherdt singled through the left side of the infield to plate Vaughn for the 11-4 final outcome.
Ryan Shay and Spencer led the team with two hits apiece.
These same two teams will do it again tomorrow afternoon, starting at 2:00 p.m.
