CINCINNATI, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team remained undefeated, downing host Xavier University by a 6-1 count Sunday afternoon (Feb. 24). The non-conference match was held at Mercy Healthplex.
With the win, the Falcons improve to a perfect 9-0 on the season. The Musketeers are now 7-4 in dual-match play this year to date.
BGSU's start to the season is the second best in program history, and is just one win shy of the school record.
For the fourth consecutive match and the sixth time in the last seven contests, the Falcons swept the doubles point. The winning teams were the usual suspects: junior Kelsey Jakupcin and freshman Christine Chiricosta at the top flight, senior co-captains Jenna Nussbaum and Andrea Volle at the second level, and sophomores Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel at the third flight.
The Chiricosta/Jakupcin team won by an 8-2 score, while the other two doubles matches were narrow 8-6 decisions.
In singles play, BGSU won at each of the top-five flights, with four of those victories in straight sets. Jakupcin lost just four games in her top-flight win, while Chiricosta dropped a total of only three games.
Babina won in straight sets at the third flight -- in the match that clinched the Falcons' victory -- while Kintzel battled back from a first-set loss to post a three-set verdict at the fourth level.
Junior Stefanie Menoff posted a straight-sets win at flight number five, losing a total of just four games.
XU's only point came at the sixth flight, where Annie Diedalis squeaked past Volle in a third-set tiebreaker. Sophomore Libby Harrison won in dominating fashion in a seventh-flight match, 8-0. Harrison's match did not count in the overall scoring.
BGSU now readies for a trip to the left coast, for a pair of spring break matches in California. The Falcons will take on UC San Diego on Tuesday, March 4, before facing Cal Poly Pomona two days later.
NOTES
* The Falcons, as mentioned, have posted the second-best start to a season in school history ... the record is a 10-0 start, under head coach Janet Parks in the 1973-74 season.
* The longest winning streak in school history (at any time of the season) is 11 matches, two seasons ago ... the 2005-06 squad, after a 2-4 start to the dual-match season, won 11 consecutive contests from Feb. 11 to March 25.
* BGSU is one win away from reaching 10 dual-match victories for a sixth consecutive season ... the current streak of five seasons is the longest in school history ... BGSU had had four-straight 10-win seasons twice before (1988-92 and 1996-97 through 1999-2000).
* The Falcons, as mentioned above, swept all three doubles matches for the fourth consecutive outing ... BGSU has gone 3-0 in doubles in six of the last seven dual matches.
* BGSU has won the doubles point in eight of this season's nine dual matches to date ... the lone exception was the Indiana State contest of Feb. 10, and the Falcons rallied to win four of the six singles matches for a 4-3 win.
* Freshman Christine Chiricosta's two wins on Sunday at Xavier move her overall record to 31-7 on the year, giving her the team lead in victories ... sophomore Samantha Kintzel has an overall mark of 30-9 on the year, while classmate Katia Babina is 28-9 ... juniors Stefanie Menoff (26-6) and Kelsey Jakupcin (26-12) are tied for fourth on the team in wins.
* Menoff has a team-best 15-2 singles mark this year, while Chiricosta is 14-4.
* In doubles, Babina is 18-3 this year to date, while Chiricosta has a mark of 17-3 and Kintzel is 17-4.
* Menoff now has a stellar singles mark of 56-12 at BGSU, tying her for 15th on the school's career list for singles victories ... Jakupcin's Sunday singles win was her 50th, tying her with Tisa Pacella (1989-92) for 16th on that chart.
* Volle now has 53 doubles victories as a Falcon, moving into a 14th-place tie with Susie Schoenberger (2002-05) ... Nussbaum has 52 doubles wins in her career, ranking 16th in BG annals.
* Jakupcin has 97 combined career victories, ranking 17th in BGSU history ... Nussbaum (94, 18th) and Volle (91, 19th) are right behind Jakupcin on that chart.
